    D4 5.0 V8

Any owners or ex owners of the D4 V8 out there? I know there can't be many.

I am interested in getting one and yes am aware of the fuel economy and range penalties over the diesels. It would be great to hear from those with experience about:

Any inherent issues with this engine?
Things to watch out for if buying?
Is there any recommended preventative maintenance particular to the V8?
Are the 6 speed ZF transmissions exactly the same as those in the diesels or are there internal differences?
Would you do it all again?

Never owned one but driven/ serviced one a couple of times now. By all accounts not as thirsty as you would think and very reliable. Maintenance costs are less than diesel by a looong way too. If i had any inclination and any money i would probably go that way myself. ..☺

Funnily enough I talked to a Gentleman() yesterday that has a 2010? V8 D4,, He likes it so much he is selling his 3 other V8D's to buy another one--
If the later ones go as well as his then

Never owned one, never driven one, BUT, I do like my V8s.
So, on one occasion, when I was at ULR, I was talking to our salesperson about the V8 Disco, she mentioned she'd just sourced an ex JLR Exec unit for a customer of hers who always liked to buy the very last of series (this was probably a year ago), and she said "they go like the clappers",...which appealed to me!!
I've noticed that you don't see many come up for sale.
Anyway, I reckon they'd be a great vehicle.

I have one and it is a truely lovely vehicle.I wouldn't say it goes like the clappers but the performance is certainly adequate.

As far as I know the ZF transmission is the same as the others, of course the programming is different. The diffs are a different ratio to the diesels though.

There are a couple of things I am aware of that should be kept in check. The spark plugs have been know to seize and pull the thread out of the head when removed and it suffers the common problem of late model Land Rovers with plastic cooling components which disintegrate with age.

The factory service intervals are a little long I think as well, even though it has an 8 litre sump. I do the services at 12K rather than the recommended 24K.
    The oil is expensive too.

The nice thing about the V8 is that it comes with pretty much every option with (from memory) only extended leather and metallic paint as extras.

Mine is running a 92l lr tank, Kaymar rear bar, OL bullbar with warn winch, second battery and AT tyres (Nitto Terra Grapplers) which all affect fuel economy. My daily drive to work involves 30km of stop start peak hour traffic along the Pacific Highway in Sydney and I average 19l/100, outside of peak hour around sydney I get 16-17l/100 and on the open road 13-14L/100. Towing my 1.5 T camper I have a best of 15.5l/100 (taking it really gently) and a worst of over 20l/100 (over the Blue Mountains).

My average over the last 2 years has been 18.37l/100.

I have removed the rear mufflers as they are larger than the diesels and hit the brackets for the rear bar when off road. Noise increase was negligible only when accelerating hard can you hear any exhaust noise and engine noise is negligible.

When I bought mine I was looking for a 3.0 HSE or a V8, the HSE doesn't come with a lot of the options standard and I couldn't find one with everything I wanted such as the cold climate pack, rear seat entertainment and e-diff, also they were a lot more expensive. The V8 had everything with the only downsides being the increased fuel consumption and the lack of an RAI.

The V8 doesn't have the torque of the diesel only having 510NM compared to 600NM however the torque is spread over a wide range and the motor pulls hard to the 6000rpm redline.

Mine is up to 140K now of which 50K has been mine, I replaced the brakes (rotors and pads) when I first got it and just did the front pads again, the front left hub had some freeplay and was replaced at the same time, the front lower control arms were replaced at 130K and I have a sticky door lock on the RHS rear door. Otherwise I have had no issues.

If something happened to mine I'd buy another.

I have a US D4 5l V8 MY2013. I love it. I don't care for the new lower horsepower V6. It saves a few miles per gallon due to that smaller more optimized engine. It's the same Jag v8 minus the turbo in Range Rovers and F-Type Jags. I have been researching how to take off the 125mph speed limit and so far have been unsuccessful. There is a dashboard vid of someone on the Autobahn maxing it out. Without the limiting I don't doubt it could hit 150 without any performance tuning. The power is noticeable. I have owned large American V8 sport utility vehicles. This is a different animal. I doubt many could compete speed wise, even with this vehicle weighing thousands of pounds more. Very easy to run out of roadway fast.

I'm not sure of the fuel types beyond diesel used Down Under but if it's premium petrol or your highest grade petrol like it is here in the US, all gas stations may not have premium. You can add octane booster to regular to keep things kosher. Short term I've heard there is no damage if you have to use a lower grade fuel. I haven't heard more on this from any truly authoritative source so it's nothing I'd attempt outside of an emergency.
Mileage is about 16mpg for me. With the 21/22 gallon tank with 19 gallons usable. If you remove the spare mounted underneath there are multiple add-on tank options around 20 gallons in size available that will double your range to about 800 miles. That's a good fit for people adding Kaymar bumpers with the swing out full size spare tire.

Here are details on the engine's history. It's the Jaguar AJ133

This link has model data including what years different transmission & other changes were implemented

I'm beyond happy that I have a steel framed V8 4x4 LR with a Jag engine.

    { We can't get the full variety of LR products here or even most of the Japanese 4x4 variants. The customs department here has been sending paramilitary police teams to seize Defenders from owners because they mixed up identification numbers showing they were over 20 years old. Any vehicle under 20 years old not offered for sale here in the US is illegal to import for 20 years. They thought many were new because of how great they looked. Dozens in my area just got their vehicles back after a year or so and a lawsuit. I'll take my Disco4 consolation prize. }

Having spent maybe an hour and a half in Terry's, including maybe a small amount of time approaching the old money on private roads I can confirm it's a delightful vehicle to drive.
    Would definitely own one

I take it you mean when you say 'approaching the old money' that you are talking about you driving my poor D4 at over the ton on those narrow undulating back roads? ...

I didn't actually feel scared until later when I said 'it gets to 170 kph pretty kick doesn't it?' ... and you admitted you had never driven that fast before! ... up until then I actually thought you knew what you were doing. ... ... Silly me!

I'm just glad now I didn't let you drive the bloody Senator or we would have been doing a long way over 200 kph given how long you had your right foot flat to boards.

By the way Shorty, the V8 D4 is the best vehicle I have ever owned by a fair margin, not because it's fairly quick, but because it drives as good as any D4, which means it is a pleasure to drive, plus it has the added bonus of being quieter and smoother and because it has every possible LR option available standard and yes as Pedro said if another one comes up at the right price I intend to buy it. ... One can never have enough Land Rovers I reckon. ...

Just one word of advice, if you get one don't let Muppet near it.
    Cheers,
    Terry

They were undulating? I could hardly tell
And I have no recollection of such a conversation occurring, besides I wasn't really looking at the Speedo
Besides, I'll draw your memory to the fact that I was totally following the legal speed limit until you said 'have a proper drive and give it some welly', so I obliged you
If you buy one you should definitely let me near it, I promise I won't drool too much.
Oh and thanks for the drive Terry, changed my life

Thanks all - just the small matter of trying to find one now! Cheers
