Stuart, I have another thought. Does the TDV8 have plastic inlet manifolds like the 3L TDV6?
Pre-2011 versions in the TDV6 can develop cracks as described in excellent detail in this thread:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...-problems.html
I note the suggestion that this issue could start with reduced performance and economy before progressing to faults and eventually restricted mode as the crack grows.
And in BobD's case a hissing noise was eventually present together with restricted performance:

Obviously I hope it's not this but it may be another thing worth looking into if the TDV8 has similar inlet manifolds.

Scott

I find that recently our Vogue has been showing 15-16 litres per hundred.
If I drive instead of the Boss the economy improves. I have no idea how hard she drives it when I am not in the car. It could be that she is out and about during the day when the traffic is heavy, but I usually drive at night and don't do a lot of stop / start driving.
I intend to clean both MAFs and also run some diesel egr cleaner spray through the intakes.
Has the MAP sensor ever been cleaned? No, it is not a part of regular service by LR or anyone else. I find I have to clean my MAP sensor every 30-40,000km, or it is gummed up with EGR gunk.

Yes - if it has never been cleaned, it is probably completely blocked off - depending on how many km your beast has done.
Here is a link on how to clean it and results from lots of people:
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Go and clean you MAP Sensor NOW!!!
FWIW, I bought a can of CRC MAF Sensor cleaner and use that for both the MAF and MAP sensors. I've found if the MAF sensor is the culprit - you will get lots of smoke, whereas if the MAP sensor is at fault - you get bad economy.
Cheers,
Rob

						SubscriberSo um
1. How do the MAFs actually come out on the TDV8? I can't see any obvious screws or catches... can I just take the filter cover off still attached to the intakes, and squirt the MAFs in situ?
2. I got some LiquiMoly diesel decarboniser which I assume is what I need to freshen up the EGR valves etc but the instructions say to squirt it in with the engine running at between 2000 and 3000 rpm - how does one do that from the engine bay? It's not as easy as the good old days of just reaching around the back of the carbie (I know!) for the throttle cable!?
3. There's a pic on the Disco3UK thread of where the MAP sensor is on the TDV6, is that a reasonable indication of where I'd find it on the TDV8?
4. The Autobarn lads sold me some injector cleaner as well - is there any harm that can come from chucking some of that in with a full tank?
5. "The Lads" also mentioned a lot of ppl (!?) are using diesel fuel additive lubricants in European cars because of Australia's rubbish diesel quality... does that hold any water, so to speak?
TIA to any with advice or humorous speculation

Hi Staurt02,
Initially I'll only comment on note 5. If you are using diesel in the main city, and semi rural areas, and you use diesel from the oil company that has two letters in it the first one being a "B" you are using some of the best quality diesel in the world, never mind Australia. All the diesel you buy from that company is made in Australia right now, the future I am not so sure. This is a fact. Any fuel that is imported is subject to the same rigorous standards. Since the closing of the "B" refinery on the Eastern seaboard I am not 100% sure that all the diesel comes from the Western side of the country where I am. Other companies I can't comment, this one I can.
Cheers Marty
