Thread: What could they have done to our fuel economy??

I did mine by taking the air filter lid off then spraying them in situ.

    2. I got some LiquiMoly diesel decarboniser which I assume is what I need to freshen up the EGR valves etc but the instructions say to squirt it in with the engine running at between 2000 and 3000 rpm - how does one do that from the engine bay? It's not as easy as the good old days of just reaching around the back of the carbie (I know!) for the throttle cable!?

Two person job! I used two cans on my Vogue, one down each intake.

    3. There's a pic on the Disco3UK thread of where the MAP sensor is on the TDV6, is that a reasonable indication of where I'd find it on the TDV8?

With the plastic engine cover off the sensors are very easy to see / access. Right on top of the intake near where the intercooler hoses attach.

    4. The Autobarn lads sold me some injector cleaner as well - is there any harm that can come from chucking some of that in with a full tank?

    Probably safe to use.

    5. "The Lads" also mentioned a lot of ppl (!?) are using diesel fuel additive lubricants in European cars because of Australia's rubbish diesel quality... does that hold any water, so to speak?

I don't think so, all fuels have to meet standards.

TIA to any with advice or humorous speculation
    As above.

Well the numbers are in after a refill and yes, it's doing a genuine 18L/100 around town, computer said 18.9.

On the back of that I've cleaned the MAF and MAP sensors, the latter of which certainly had a fair bit of gunk on them, and I popped the injector cleaner in the tank.

The first thing I noticed after cleaning the MAPs (the MAFs were way too clean to possibly have been an issue) was that on starting, Roger fired up like a hungry tiger being slapped with a raw steak - no time for the ignition coil light to glow and about two thirds of the cranking. Once rolling I can actually hear the turbo spooling up almost from idle again and there's a lot more enthusiasm with each gear change. So who knows if it's going to fix the fuel economy issue but it's definitely a worthwhile exercise for the sake of a can of MAF cleaner and the time it takes to boil the kettle for a cuppa.

I've been rechecking the dipstick, because it couldn't be any fuller without being over full. The oil is exactly at the very top of the upper plastic marker.

Is it possible that overfilling could clag the MAP sensors or other parts of the engine and is the cause of my issue?

When I have an extra foot to keep the revs up I'll do the EGR spraying thing...

Mine still seems pretty bad, now having unhappy thoughts about having to replace the EGR valves.

Yeah best highway economy I've been able to get is 11.1 (actual), and after driving Melbourne to Blue Mountains there's already quite a film of oil on the MAPs.

Can we just block the EGRs off?

Nope, but there is a software fix through BAS - you send them your ecu info via a GAP IID diagnostic tool and they can send you a software 'patch' to turn off the egr function BUT you have to physically remove the butterfly from the egr as well, no blanking. Contact Pete Bell via the BAS website for info or you can pm him from here - I think he is a member.

I think you can get them programmed out. Question for BAS in the new year.

If it can be done via the nanocom then I think I'll be all over that

The last full tank of fuel I have been the only one driving, and we did a 500 km country road trip (650 km total).

Trip computer says 9.4 l/km, which is a bit more like it. I think the poor economy it usually gets might be due to the driving done. Lots (mostly) short trips (often less than 1km!). I think the drive has done it good.
