    Rear Wheel Carrier

    Hi All,

I know there have been a lot of discussions with regards to rear wheel carriers for Discoveries, giving the owner more spares or more fuel.

Obviously the Cons are the fact that some people think they ruin the look of the car, especially where the rear bumper gets replaced and they can be in the way during daily driving requirements.

So, pros and cons aside, I saw a VW Touareg the other day with a system I've never seen/noticed before. The spare was separate (swings away) from the rear hatch like a lot of systems are but it looked like it had been done at the factory, as the car bumper looked original.

I felt it looked very smick, well designed, integrated and still attractive. Don't know if it's a VW OEM option but if I ever needed to go down that path, I'd be hoping there are options like that for the Discos.

There are rear spare options that retain the rear bumper, Opposite Lock sell one brand I believe. Rijidij sells one which moves the spare slightly in-board so avoids having to duplicate the RH tail lights.

I've been looking at these too. I think Opposite Lock will fit the Frontrunner or the Outback Accessories carrier. I like the Frontrunner as rear bumper stays in place, it doesn't cover the driver's side lights and by reports on here, lifts off easily when not in use.
Lots of info in this thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...l-carrier.html more on other options (Outback Accessories and Rijididj pics too) in this thread too: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...-rear-bar.html

    Thanks mate,

Yeah the spare was dead centre and higher than the bumper in this one meaning the lights, tow bar and rego plates are clear and unaffected.

I've just Googled some images and it's actually got a VW badge on it, so I'm thinking OEM. It's very well done. Very, very neat.

I have a rijidij rear carrier and it's top notch, keeps all the original equipment just need to sort out your rear sensors.

It's very similar to the one pictured.

Yes it was a VW factory option that very few went for. And how great would it be if LR did the same. Maybe as part of a bush pack...

I have the dolium one keeps bumper no extra lights, slightly more hassle when opening the back but not really a problem.

I used to sell VWs for 10yrs, and as Stuart said, they were a factory option. From memory they were about $2100 and included a full size alloy as opposed to the pump up inflatable piece of crap they came with.
But the fuel tank was 100l so was a great tourer. Just that no one bought many of them so they discontinued the option by the time the 2nd generation came around.

Easy to understand why that occurred I suppose but I'd love to see such a seamless option available. Probably better if it wasn't OEM from a cost perspective but you can see the benefits when it is done from scratch. There also wouldn't be any sensor or camera or warranty issues either.
