I just bought an awning for $89 from '4wd super centre', I've never owned an awning previously and very conscious that cheap chinese stuff may not last the distance but for the price it may suits an occasional user.

I switched the brackets to sit it low and bought an attachment wall for $35 extra so all in all a very cheap solution.. now i cross my fingers.

Thanks for sharing that (especially the photos) - I too had been looking at the 4WD Super Centre awnings, but hadn't seen it for such a low price. The lowest I have seen is $99 + $20 p&p (2M x 2.5M).

I normally go for the surefire quality things, but the number of times I would use an awning would probably never justify even $250 spent on one. I'd be genuinely interested in seeing how well it holds up over time and reckon it would be the same as the others.

Lukeis... May I suggest you be VERY careful with how that awning is mounted.

On corrugations I can guarantee that it's going to bounce against your roof with the alloy rail...

And the ensuing damage will be expensive..

You'll need to make up some braced mounts to prevent the bounce.

Good point Mr BFG.I looked at the mounts and thought they looked a little limp. Not seen enough mounts to offer advice.

    Thanks guys, appreciate the advice.

I think the alloy is actually a lot further from the roof than it looks and the bracket is very solid but I'm definitely going to give it another thorough inspection next time I fit it to the car (will only be on my car when I need it) to be sure as I definitely don't want any damage.

Will report back if it's an issue. Those aren't the standard brackets because they weren't long enough to get it past the plastic roof rack trim when facing down so I made cut new ones from the hardware.

Eddo - last week they were on sale even cheaper (4th bday sale or something). Walls are still cheap so may get a second now.

See if you can get a second section of angle bracket and bolt it to the lower 2 mount bolts and the empty hole on the top of the existing bracket,it will help.
Some sort of triangle in there would even be stronger.

I finally got a chance to put the awning on and check the mounts..

You were right that the aluminium bar is very close to the car roof however if driving on a corrugated road and the bracket bends the bolts from the bracket will hit the roof rack before the bar hits the roof.

The only thing i need to do is add some rubber to the bolt ends to protect the rack in this instance but appreciate the heads up as they would potentially have rubbed through over time.

All in all pretty happy with my $89 purchase, it was a fairly windy weekend here and the awning was up to the challenge!

    Hey @Lukeis - nice shade

Bit off topic, only new to LR have just bought a D4, do you mind me asking what type of wheels you're running. I've read about the Compomotives but they look like a different 18?

I was reading a lot a few threads on another LR forum and seems like a lot of guys in the US are running a 1.5" spacer and then can use pretty much any 18 but haven't read anyone doing that in Australia.
