    Lesson learned.

One thing I am now aware of with owning a Discovery is the suppliers of parts. There is a great deal of difference between them. Since i bought my discovery I have been on a fast track to make the car as capable as possible and also to protect the vital parts. Some suppliers have been quick in delivery ie next day the part arrived. Others I am still waiting now well over a month. Having paid over the good oil I then discover they have reduced the price of the part. I am now requesting a delivery date when ordering, as I now realise that a cheaper price of a part is not worth the cost of waiting. Its a pity because i have refused trips to places with my 4WD club until i am satisfied the car is bush prepared. Annoying when you have supposidly the most capable and comfortable 4Wd in Aus and you are too scared to take it bush for the fear of doing damage.

That sounds like a mind set issue...

You can take it almost anywhere out the box without damage. It's up to you behind the wheel how hard it hits something Lesson learned.

I was going to say the same thing. Not sure what protection the OP wants before he can go off road but nothing is really needed.

The most important thing is using low range to activate some of the off road smarts and learning how to drive using the terrain settings and also the vehicle heights, which are set automatically when in low range. You must tackle stuff slowly and not quickly like most people seem to in a live axle 4x4. Any protection doesn't change that.

As above, depends on how crazy you want to go. I don't think you "need" anything at all for most club trips, a good set of AT tyres and a compressor bash plate will let you do just about anything with care, add a set of sliders and you are more than ready.

And with a set of Max Trax, just in case, the vehicle is almost unstoppable

I dont want to publicly name companies as some are on this website. I like to do black or double black diamond tracks and so want to protect parts underneath. With my previous cars I had all the underneath and side protection just in case. I do tracks because I like the challenge not because I like the scenery etc. For example some people do the canning and take 3 - 4 weeks. Ist time I took 18 days. with my son because of a tight schedule we did it in 11 days. So I am not gentle on my vehicles. Hence I want themas best prepared as possible. Now I know thatsome people will think what the hell??. To me its the challenge of the drive not the view or the destination.

If you think you need all that underbody protection on the canning you must have done a different canning than I did. We passed a 2wd pergoet that did it with a D1 as backup

I think you are over playing what your needs are for a very capable stock standard vehicle.,

We met a stock D4 In 2010 on the canning who was leading a tag a long who done it in 8 days.

Your vehicle you choose what you think it needs.

    Cheers Ean
