Got me buggered why the mounts are not slotted at manufacture.
Thats the logical answer to the problem, however the location of the mount hole on the ARB bar I dont think lends itself well to that solution. Possible it would affect the strength of the outer wing

Scott, I'm not the man to say how it works through the glass, but it does. The two parts of the aerial having adhesive pads to stick either side of the glass.
Found it most convenient with the cable remaining inside tucked up behind the A pillar trim to the dash to the radio under seat. Mic with the controls stored in the centre storage box when not country travelling.
This small aerial is the only hint of a UHF being installed. Vehicle is a MY13 RRS.

Quote from GME "The AE5002 is an Australian made on-glass antenna, pre-tuned to 477MHz and with 2.1dBi gain. It has an inconspicuous under-glass coupling box."

I have two aerials (one for UHF & one for telephone) mounted on the bull bar using the mounting holes in the wings that you are referring to. Both have coax cable joiners fitted just below the aerial mounting base, so can easily be disconnected / removed / replaced should the need arise. If you use decent quality joiners, there is no significant loss or adverse effect on signal / gain.

I used to have the UHF aerial mounted up on top of the bar (it is the smaller of the two aerials - the telephone one is too big to go on top of the bar) but SWMBO did not like the glare off the aerial in front of her when I turned on the LED bar under the roof rack, so moved this aerial down onto the other wing on a large spring base I had left over from another installation.

When I'm down in Perth, I generally run the shorter of two interchangeable masts I have for the telephone. It is almost exactly the same height (slightly higher) as the top of the roof rack, so works as a good height guide for undercover / below ground parking.

Out bush or on long runs (eg across the Paddock), I run a much higher 9db gain mast for the phone. Gives me phenomenal reception, and SWMBO loves the fact that I can use the "hot spot" on my iPhone and she can check her e-mails etc in the middle of nowhere.
    Cheers .........

A bloke on another 4WD site I visit made a roof mount out of a bicycle kick stand.
It can be folded down when not required or will be pushed down if you clobber something.

Sounds like it works the same as mine. I'd never go back to an aerial on the bullbar.
