    Questions from a newbie :-)

    Hi,
am taking ownership of a Series 4 Discovery tomorrow (Brisbane) and wondering about the following please:
    - The car comes with 1 key fob and wondering where I should go to get another?
    - Do I need to buy a specific code reader or will any ODB2 compatible reader work?
    - Have sourced an extended factory warranty (up to 220k kms) and wondering if anyone else has used these products and whether they are worth the $$$? It is not the usual warranty sold in car yards (we are buying privately) and given the car has done 140k km thinking it might be a good idea?

    thanks

    Welcome

Key fob - need the year and can guide you to a source of aftermarket versions for about $40-50.

For a code reader search for GAP IID tool group buy. There are 28+ ECUs in a D4 and a std OBD reader can't do it.. (the GAP tool also programs your new key)

With regard to warranty - read the fine print...
They tend to have a LOT of exclusions and requirements for over servicing which will cost more than you're likely to spend on repairs.

Further to Tombie's post above, have a read here for lots of details on the iiD tool:
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/verandah/2...-firmware.html

Aside from fault reading/clearing and key programming it has other useful functions.
For example it can set the vehicle to tight tolerance mode, which is required for a wheel alignment.
This ability then opens up wider and more convenient options for wheel alignments without going through a dealer.

    Cheers,

    Second what the others said.

If you need a key the dealer will charge to code it to your car. That in itself is enough reason to get an IId tool and code it yourself.

Also your in south east QLD so join our Facebook group (SEQ-LRD4) if you like, we can take you out on some trips and teach you all about your new car 😁

Thanks Tombie, the car is a 2010 model which we pickup tomorrow. Keen to acquire another key fob asap and wondering how I would do this?

There is a thread a few pages back about getting a newer style (smaller) keyfob off ebay for about $50. I got one for my MY11 and programmed it the my Nanocom (similar to IIDtool mentioned above). Do a search for key fob and you should be able to find it...

    Edit: Feeling generous....

Did you put the squeeze on the dealer to provide the (coded) spare in the deal ?

Give Dan a ring at Duckworths. You won't beat his price (340 pounds posted directly to your door for the IID Tool with Bluetooth). Mine arrived yesterday.

Ignore the price shown below - I just copied this from somewhere to give you all of his contact details etc.

I found it easy to call Dan direct and finalise payment etc over the phone, as I don't use Paypal. It was shipped to me the same day (but took 21 days to get here via Royal Mail / Australia Post - which is unusually slow for deliveries from the UK in my experience - not sure why it took so long this time).

    Cheers .........
