    rebuild engine or not? 2005 D3Se 350k

Loving my 2005 D3. Put a new gear box in, new ..........

Engine is now past 345,000km- would you consider recondition your engine?

Worked for a short while in a WA caterpillar shop- All the trucks, dozers... had full transmission and engine rebuilds.

Assuming I want to keep running with Zero issues or as few as possible I am tossing up the idea of rebuilding my engine.

I wouldn't, preferring to fit a low km Territory engine either when the existing one starts showing problems or even pre-empting the move to do the change-over at a convenient time rather than a possibly inconvenient time.

I was interested to see in last week cars guide or similar in a Saturday paper

there was an owner review of Territories and some had complained of spun bearings just like D3s.
    I suppose its logical really.

I love these stories! Makes me feel like a puppy with only 158k on the clock.

Recently there was a story on a D4 with 400k plus that died of natural causes. This was reckoned to be an Aussie PB at the time.

There was a guy on Disco3 that had mega kms on his.

We read more stories about the random problems but I suspect there is a larger fleet out there happily clocking up big kms.

IIRC there was a D3 on Disco3 that failed at 350K miles after a life towing cars on a trailer so at 350K kms there should be good life yet.

Frequently used machinery generally lasts longest

I agree Graeme. My engine is showing no signs of any issues at all. I am fairly to very confident it will pull me past 500,000km.

I do tow at times but sadly not nearly as much as I would like to ( Boat and camping trailer)

Just an idea tossing around in my head. I could buy a new one but I could have brought a new D4 at the time I grabbed my D3. I do not assume any thing lasts for ever of course.

Maintained very well by Craig, Jason and Owen at Ritter whom I had not asked this question about rebuilding my engine. I my just love it to death when ever that occurs.

As I found out last year with my boat engine it is not the main part of the engine that dies but a small inconsequential piece do do with the top end or cooling system that causes detonation.

I wonder if the heads could be rebuilt or bought separately?
