    2010 SDV6 driveline Clunk/knock/tick

    Gents,
Some assistance/advice would be appreciated. My D4 has just started making a rather loud clunking sound that has gotten worse over the last 4 weeks.

I might be a coincidence but it started not long after a service and having the lower control arms replaced, wheel alignment done and new brake pads fitted to the front. The total cost was over $2300 so I would hope that it has been done properly.

I am reasonably competent in terms of mechanical stuff and after much crawling around I have not been able to see anything obvious.

    Testing has determined the following:
Directly related to the speed of the front/rear prop shaft
Light load generates the noise, no load or coasting = no noise. Moderate acceleration = no noise.
Doesn't seem to do it from dead cold, rather it took around 5 min before I was able to get it to make a noise this morning.

I was able to replicate the noise with the vehicle running on blocks with the wheels off with light application of the brake to load the drive train up.

I am thinking it is the front prop shaft but I have no idea. I can't test it without the front shaft due to constant 4wd.

Anything else you can advise would be appreciated. we need the car running properly as we are driving it to QLD in a couple of weeks. The shop that did the original work has been good however, trying to find time to fit me in at this time of year is a bit of an issue.

    Regards
    Paul

Sounds like something isn't correctly fitted drive shaft wise - not TC to diff but rather Diff to Hub.

Also check the brake pads are seated correctly and the calliper secure.

I noticed in the second video that the noise corresponds to the rotation of the white patch on the rotating brownish part (sorry for the vague explanation but I don't know what the parts are ). Presumably it's has to have something to do with that area. Is the white patch caused by rubbing against something and maybe the source of the noise?

Sounds a bit tinny to me....could be one of the under body guards.Do they remove any when doing an alignment? In the second video, the carbon fibre looking part in the lower section of the picture gets up a bit of vibration as the revs increase.

The guards were removed to take the video as I was using a number of the bolt points to mount the bracket for the camera. I have send a copy of the video to the workshop that did the work to give them a head start on the repairs when I can get it in.

The white was a chalk mark that I put in the front prop shaft so that the rotation was visible when it was rotating. I did the same with the front wheel colouring in the B on the inside of the tyre to get a reference point.

Take your wheels off and start checking...

They don't touch the tail shaft but they do touch the CVs and half shafts.

Almost sounds like one isn't it the diff correctly

Was in the shop today, verdict is that they think the front prop shaft. New one will be here Monday to fit up. If there was a way to drop the front shaft and still be able to drive the thing without it chucking a spaz then I would do that to confirm but I believe that even in Rock Crawl the centre diff has enough slack that it will not drive the car without the front shaft in.

Rock crawl should work but only if the front wheels are straight ahead and the speed is kept very low so of not much use anyway.

noise is prop shaft speed , I wouldn't think the prop shaft itself more like its touching on something at either the diff pinion or tc output but seems very coincidental it was after the work done.

    Smile Prop shaft Suspicion

Hi Neld can you offer up what the actual outcome is/was. I have a very similar issue, very similar tinnie knock come rattle. Had it for ages when it used to only be evident on corrugated gravel roads but now after GRR and Tanami, Munja etc is very much there nearly all the time. Goes away as soon as I touch the brakes. We have chased exhaust, brake wheel backing plate etc etc. New front pads go on on Wed so it would be good to show them your videos - that is so much my rattle.

    Cheers Ian A
