Pretty sure I need a new tranny

    Hi All,

I've have a noise in the drive train for a few months. After heading to Condingup (east of Esperance) for Easter it has now become terrible. There is also a vibration. I thinking it's the tranny. If I'm coasting and drop it into neutral the noise goes away.

    Thoughts on the problem?

If it is the tranny what are the options? I know (IIRC from previous discussions) a recon unit will cost about $7,000. What are the other options?

    Thanks in anticipation.

It could be drive shafts, univeral joints or even diff under load only? Can you hear it at walking speed? If so get out and see if you can pin it down a bit more. Probably best to have some one driving while you walk but I have done it with out a driver in a paddock feeding out a few hundred times

If its is the gear box A&B automatics offered me about 5.5k for a reconditioned box with warranty. That was installed so to buy it and get some one in WA to do it for you it should be about 5k or so to buy only. Shipping should only be a hundred or two.

    Hope you get it sorted.

I've had some dealings with Precision Autos in Osborne Park. They seem genuine and I don't think they'd sell you a box if it didn't need it. They will O//H or do recon boxes too.
Incidentally have you had the box serviced? And how long ago??

Would think it more likely to be shot bearing in transfer case or diffs .

I would check the rear tail-shaft centre bearing first.

I had pretty much the same problem in my D2, It ended up being a collapsed bearing in my transfer case.

when my trans let go it startd to make a whine like a supercharger belt around the front of the trans - could be heard when parked up idling. Mine got done by Automac transmissions in myree Bailey Automatics | Perth | RAC Automatic Repairer Service was good, it just took a long time as they pulled the trans, stripped it down and decided it was too badly damaged for them to rebuild, so it got sent to ZF in sydney. It then required a few parts that got sent on the slow boat taking the scenic route - all up around 10 weeks before I had my disco back. ZF charge around $4300 for a rebuild so you'll need to factor in the remove and replace costs ontop of that

    Thanks for replies.

The box has been serviced as it has the metal pan. Not sure when, as it was done prior to my ownership. I've had it for about 70,000 kms so I was/am going to service it. Was going to prior to the Easter trip but with the noise I didn't want to spend money on a service (with no guarantee of saving it) only to find I had to replace it anyway.

Failed bearing.....Interesting, on reflection, it sounds like a very grumbly bearing. I'll have to investigate with this in mind.

    Thanks again all.

Id also go for a front or rear diff bearing issue. Get someone who knows these vehicles to check.
We are replacing a few now. You can fit a D4 rear diff in its place (must be like for like, not ediff if you don't have one already)
