    D4 on white smoke!

Had a course training a couple of weeks ago, white smoke suddenly come out before I tried push the sand dune. It doesn't feel any diesel or oil burning, no water leak found. Any one experiencing this in the past? I hadn't been to the dealer yet since they always tell you nothing unless it happens in front of their eye.

    cheers,
Only times I've seen white smoke, the car has been burning ATF, through a vacuum line, or brake fluid, ditto. I have no idea if either thing is possible on a D4, so just a FYI.

That said, are you sure it was "smoke". It dissipated pretty quickly, so would seem more likely to be water vapour. Either way, rangieman is correct. You have all the evidence you need.

I'd agree, white smoke (unaccompanied by strange noises, etc) is usually something being burnt in the engine.

Did the car actually shut down, or did you stop when you saw the smoke?
    Any error messages?
    Continue blowing smoke afterwards?
Do they have a DPF? If it had been working hard at low revs, may have triggered a burn cycle, maybe???

I took that video. The car did not stall and did not display any error codes. Gary did not report any loss of power that I can recall. He had a second attempt at that hill and it was blowing plenty of white smoke, so much that we suggested he reverse back down so we could investigate. Once down off the hill there was no further smoke and we could not see anything obviously wrong with the engine. It was fine for the rest of the day. We had been driving for over an hour at 100kph to get to that sandy track. It is still a mystery I assume but am interested in what the dealer has to say.

Mike, Thanks for the video taken, otherwise, the dealer always wait for it happen again. I didn't experience any abnormal noise or losing power, it seems might be relate to water into engine if couldn't smell anything. We had a river crossing and doubted if it reached air intake unless leak from Snokel.

I wonder if the incline is a factor? Something in the pipework coming through after tilting? Maybe water?

I did that same water crossing with no snorkel and there would be no water in the intake from that. If you look at the video I took of Gordon crossing the deep part the water was nowhere near his air intake.

I had the same thought. I mentioned water vapour only because the white "smoke" seemed to dissipate quite quickly. The angle might suggest that something, such as ATF, is sitting somewhere in say the plenum is suddenly being drawn into the intake side of the engine. It may be something as simple as something that was left over from manufacture, that suddenly got introduced into combustion. PD ( Pre Delivery ) has never been perfect, even if you bought a Lexus.

I would like to hear what the stealer has to say after seeing the vid.
