How to buy a 2nd hand D4 in another state

How should a new guy like me approach evaluating a 2nd hand D4 like this, especially when it's so far away?

    We've taken a wrong turn

You could possibly ask if anyone on the forum in Darwin would mind taking a look for you to give you some sort of unbiased view if it looks OK. That may at least help narrow down if it's worth chasing.

In my case, I live in Melbourne and bought mine in Sydney - I flew up for a day trip to check it out as the cost of the flights was pretty minimal compared to the cost of the vehicle...

Some have bought vehicles unseen from interstate... but I'm not that trusting

How to buy a 2nd hand D4 in another state

It sounds awesome given it's build. You could find either a dealer, preferably an independent to do an independent inspection on it. This is what we did in the UK for exotic cars. They'd review history, look for the common issues, and provide a report. It's better than a personal review as they have the knowledge. This would normally be a condition of sale. I'm sorry but I don't know of any LR dudes in NT or ones within the proximity of the seller.

Thanks all. The deal seems too good to be true, but it could just be a lucky find. There’s a LR dealer in Darwin – maybe all I have to do is pay them to check it out.

I’d be tempted to drive it back to Brisbane, maybe take my Dad along for the ride. He hasn’t been out in that part of the world for a long time.

    Interstate buy

I bought mine interstate (from Vic to Qld), sight unseen. The seller had already had an independent inspection done for someone else. He seemed pretty trustworthy on the phone... () And it worked out really well... But that's not everyone's experience - I know I was blessed!

Narangga is a member on here, good friend and lives close(ish) to Darwin... He may be able to help.

Does seem like a good deal! No 7 seats???

Through the sales sight you can get an appraisal done by Red Book, or you could go to the equivalent of the RACQ, which is what two people did with mine when I sold it interstate.
Neither of these guys got back to me due to being told by both companies that the price was right.
Mended up selling it to a guy in Sydney, sight unseen,, him and his wife flew into Melb, we met them, he inspected it and took it for a drive and handed over the cash. He's pretty happy with it.

Having just had a look at a car for someone else,, I can tell you, the heat is on
If they buy it, and it's a Lemmon because you missed something, I guess it could come back on you a bit,, but pics and a phone call during inspection is good.

5 seats is fine for me – I want a car like this for getting away, not playing bus driver. And I’m not looking to replace the Disco Sport. My wife is getting a bit tired of me stealing her car to play with while she can’t drive my Golf due to it being a manual, so the D4 would be focused on the fun stuff.

Thanks again for the helpful comments. I’m inclined to try and book the inspection with the LR dealer up in Darwin unless anybody has a good reason why that’s a bad idea?

So I contacted the seller, asking politely if he had some documentation about its service history he could share with me. All I got was short comments about “full LR service history” and he wouldn’t directly answer me when I asked if he was OK with me calling the dealer to get some details about what was done and when. Eventually said, “Details are in the log book. If that's not good enough I'm not interested in selling. Thanks for your enquiry.”

He did tell me that it’d been serviced in Darwin and Wollongong. So I rang them anyway with the VIN from the carsales report. The car had regular services up to 2015 and about 60K in Darwin, then a 70K and 90K a year apart in Wollongong... and now it has 138K on it with no further service history.

    Buyer beware.
