    Disco wave?

The Cook and I have over the last approx. 18 days travelled to Broome and seen many more "Ds" on the road than any other LR model.
Good waves from them all especially the later vehicles as probably early model drivers don't expect us to lower our sights.....
    Not many Defenders at all.
A bloke in one of the few parks we stayed in had a sorry tale with his D...... engine replaced and major transmission problems over the about 7 years he'd owned it.
From what he said it was neglect of the major kind....... how the hell can anyone never check or get engine oil and filters changed? 😱
I showed him how to remove the air filter to at least bang excess dust out but don't know if he bothered or not.
Yet both him and his wife said about how good their service man was when their alternator crapped itself not long into their trip. Can't wondering why the oil never got changed then.🤔
I must go to the beach now to do some perving.....😎

Must be friendlier in your neck of the woods. We have traveled the Bruce north from Brisbane to Gladstone 5 or 6 times in the last 3 months & had only 1 or 2 waves including one from a D1. Normally, vanners wave, except if you drive a D. Not sure what Fender drivers think when you wave, not sure it's printable.

    Disco wave?

Has anyone noticed how much an oncoming 70 series looks like a Disco from a distance ahead. I've had several false waves. I drove across the Nullarbor and back a few years ago and did not see another LR outside of the Capital cities. They are all up north obviously.

Great to see a Disco Waves thread!

I wave back when a Disco driver waves... but not many do. I must be too beardy-wierdy Defenderish.

Ah! You see, I go back to the Series days when every Landrover driver waved in recognition of oncoming Landrover drivers. Mind you, there was a lot of time to prepare, as approaching Series vehicles had heaps of time to size each other up. Come to think of it, you probably had time to share a beer or cup of tea as you passed!
Then came Range Rovers. You didn't wave to them. If you did, they just stared back nonplussed.
But after a while, probably when the second owners came along, they did wave to each other. Sometimes to Series or 110 vehicles if that's where they had come from, only to be hurt as the wave was either not returned as it had not been seen or was returned too late by a surprised recipient.
Rangies to Rangies sometimes. Landies to Landies often.
But then came the Discovery. The Series drivers realised it was a more practical version of a Rangie and were not sure whether to wave or not. The Rangie drivers probably didn't recognise it. Discos tended to wave to Discos. Sometimes.
With new Rangies and D1s everywhere in the city, attracting new drivers who stepped out of other luxury cars, there was not the knowledge of the tradition or the desire to wave to someone who you were probably competing with in business anyway.
Second and third generation Rangie buyers, who by this stage had equipped their cars with bullbars, winches, roofracks etc, tentatively waved whenever they saw a similar Rangie. Equipped Discos waved to other equipped Discos, 110 and Defender drivers waved as they saw a kindred spirit approaching. Series drivers still nearly always waved, probably out of mutual sympathy.
Then came the P38 and the D2. And the D3 and D4 and D5. Then some car called a Freelander. Then a new Rangie and then a newer Rangie and various spinoff models called Sport, Evoque and goodness knows what else.
If you waved to all of them now you'd probably be arrested for harassment.
But now, in the bush, in the natural habitat of the Landrover, you still wave.

I wave to most D's, especially if they're kitted up. Not many wave back at all

I'm thinking I'll stop waving at Defenders of any ilk,,, rarely do I get waves back from them either, even when I was in my Deefer.

From my experience the older the Landrover the more likely you will have your wave returned.
Here in Gerro there seems to be a concentration of Landrover's and it is a rare day indeed that I go to town without seeing at least half a dozen different Landies.

I have a series and a Rangie sport.
Here in the southern highlands almost every series to deefer owner raises at least the obligatory index finger if not a full hand.
disco's and rangies are the opposite except for those 8-10 I personally know.
I think it's because the former are part of a club who enthusiastically and passionately love their vehicles for all their faults. They are united through the bond of shared adversity and possible eccentricity.
The less mainstream the more the passion, the tighter the bond.
Don't get me wrong, I love my rangie too, as a driving car for comfort, safety, touring, off road, towing, posing.... etc.. they're second to none. But I wonder how many take them for granted, don't share any bond and therefore don't wave.
That's my philosophical reflection for the day!.. Rob.
