Going Bush
Hi Simmo.
Parking the RAM wont be much fun. It is 6m long and has a 13+m turning circle. Manouvering the van will also be more difficult. Luckily we have a smaller sensible car for when we are back in Sydney so that helps.
We have been "dieting" the van. We have removed what we dont use. Its a strong and heavy van to start with. Add 300l (kg) of water for when we go free camping and it quickly gets too heavy. Essential toys like 2 bikes also add weight. We like the van and dont really want to sell it.
We do go to remote areas and plan to do more. The D4 has taken us for a 3/4 lap so far and has done really well with not even a flat tyre.
GVM upgrades dont really help. Its the GCM (Gross Combined Weigh) that needs to go up from the D4's 6740. I need about 7500+.
I am taking a RAM for a test drive next week...if the ride is that bad then ...i dont know what I will do. I dont like the ford option as the right hand drive conversions done lately havent been done very well.
I agree, it is more the width of these vehicles on Australian bush tracks that is the issue, The length can also be an issue, but no more than an Iveco or similar. The weight can also be a minor issue in mud and sand. We have had Iveco fire appliances and have not had too many dramas with them, no more than normal anyway. The Iveco 4x4 set up is way better than any of the pick up trucks.
Don't get me wrong I would love a big Chevy or Ram, but just to expensive and impractical if you want to use off road here. The price is also BS best part of $140k here, then add extras. A friend of mine in the US bout a Ram earlier this year with all the fruit inc on road for $42. A $100k mark up to buy one here is a joke.
