Perfect Graeme. At least you’d thought it through.
For MY10 D4s the brake m/c and all pipes and hoses are the same part number for 2.7 and 3.0 engines. The vacuum pumps are not the same but as that is before the m/c I assumed that it wouldn't have any impact. My 1st hard braking test using new 2.7 discs, calipers and pads triggered ABS with the 19" wheels on coarse tar and caused me to think that I would hit the windscreen in the process, but I expect they would have overheated more quickly than the larger 3.0 brakes with repeated use especially if towing a heavy load.
People are happy to fit LT265/65R18 tyres (mostly BFG AT KO2) to D4s that are fitted with MY12+ shocks whilst a few others fit LT285/60R18.
PS I have a set of part worn LT245/70R17 Duratracs on BMW X5 rims collecting dust in my shed, but not the special nuts that are required for legal thread engagement. I also have the 2.7 front calipers that were removed when the D4 went to my son.
PPS No biasing valve is fitted, relying on wheel speed sensors to detect lock-up and the abs modulator to limit pressure to locking wheels.

I'm resisting the option to replace my L322's front 6-pot Brembos with the 2-piston floating calipers and slightly smaller discs from the MY11/12 na 5.0 L322 to allow fitment of 18" rims until I've exhausted all 19" & 20" tyre options. I've been told that the brake change is a user certified change as the lesser brakes are from the same year model vehicle and that vehicle's engine produces more power than mine. Those calipers are the same 3.0 D4 calipers and the discs the same size ( only the hole for the retaining screw is in a different spot) but I don't want to reduce the braking capabilities if other tyre options are available.

Between the following A/T's, all available in 285/60R18:
BFG A/T KO2
Nitto Terra Grappler
Bridgestone 697
Add to that the impressive 275 65 18 Hankook M/Ts if you want aggressive as can be.
You won't need anything else. I was driving through very soft sand for 20kms 2 weeks ago at 10PSI and had no drama's. Small amount of sidewall chipping, which would have occurred no matter what size rim it was.
I have zero intentions of going to 17" wheels (In fact I sold a set of 5 a few weeks ago for $300) as the 18's are that good. The only thing you're going to lose out on is the extremely good beading on the standard LR 18" wheels by not doing the brake change. Although that's hardly worth the $2000.
Not sure if anyone on here has popped a bead on the Compomotives or these steel 18" wheels while beach driving though? So it could not make a lot of difference.
I popped a bead on my Compomotives in the dunes at Albany in January. The rear slid sideways with some force into the edge of a rut and that was it. Just pumped it up again with no worries, however.

Thanks again for the discussion guys, really helpful.
Andrew from Tuffant got straight back to me after I enquired, very professional.
Sounds silly I know, but I just don't quite like the look of the tuffant 18" rims.
But at $1245 for 6 rims the price is great.
I have emailed green oval several times, never got a reply - has anyone bought their compomotive rims in the past 6-12 months??
A set of 6 will be $3390 though, it is sure up there!
I have emailed Compomotive direct also.
Last question, what is the ideal tyre size to put on the 17" rims... now I know they are 7" rims I am thinking the footprint is a little small as we carry heavy loads, the extra width is helpful one would think for spreading load?
Again, thanks for the comments and input.
The most common size is 245/70/17 also 255/65/17 will fit, but some 265s will fit (ie) 265/65/17
(same rolling diameter as 245/70) and 265/70/17 with a slight rub at full lock, and if you have rear air they rub on the inner left rear at full compression although my 265/70/17 Kumho's didn't rub.
Just look up the manufacturers specs for rim size, also I would worry more about the load index of the tyre rather than the actual width, if you carry big loads then I wouldn't go any lower than 119 load index.
Baz.
