I opted for the tuff ant steel wheels and after seeing that am glad I waited and went the steel option. This is the first time I have seen cracked Compomotive rims. So the obvious question how old and how much "abuse" have they coped?

						HI all
My first real post since I introduced myself.
I have 2 Compomotive rims that have cracks starting on the inside rim edge. IMG_1708-1.jpgIMG_1704-1.jpg
Compomotive reckon they can't warranty them but I am also concerned for the other 4 I have. We are heading out on a trip in July Perth to Alice SPrings, Longreach, Birdsville, Coober Pedy so a fair few kms on dirt roads. I still have to find 2 more for the trip as well.
Has anyone out there experienced the same issue? Is it common?
Cheers

I know of one other cracked Compo via this forum. I don’t recall exactly what thread it was in, probably a year ago I’m guessing. I’ve not suffered any cracks in mine, touch wood, after travelling some pretty rough roads. So it’s pretty rare but can happen obviously. Perhaps replacement with steelies is worth considering.

SubscriberSorry to say but these cracks will reflect a heavy direct impact. Running too low a tyre pressure or too fast and hit a pot hole?
Alloy wheels will crack whereas a steel wheel will buckle. Both will damage, but one can be more catastrophic.
I presume you haven’t owned them since new, or does this make you think back to some occasions and think “that was a Big Bang!”

The worst one was my second spare so when I put KO2s on it went back up on the roof.
Agreed I haven't had it since new and they are 8 years old but I haven't lost a tyre to a pothole or suchlike. Cracks weren't picked up when the tyres were fitted and during the mechanics services until I got the front bushes done and the mechanic checked the rest of the vehicle. The one found on the car was right hand rear.
I would have also thought the paint layer would have been damaged around the crack and why only on the inside?
I would have thought if I can get two cracked then there must be plenty others out there. My LR mechanic has only seen one other as well.

Unless your vehicle is MY10-11 and the rear calipers are the original alloy ones, D3/D4 LR 18" rims will fit the rear. If the rear calipers are alloy then cast iron ones from a D3 or any 2.7 D4 or a later 3.0 D4 will fit and will take the same brake pads.

Both of those photos show classic evidence of a big hit in the area of the cracks. Sometimes the damage doesn't come through to the surface until later after lots of load and temperature cycling (ie. driving). Aluminum alloy fatigues more readily than steel in this sort of use. The Compos are forged and built to a very high standard with properly tempered materials, and have a relatively large load rating, so I'd have to go with overload (impact or other abuse) given the pictures posted.

I hit a tree root and wood lodged it between the rim and the tyre. Deflaton and bead break was the only way to get the wood out. No damage to the rim and a large gouge to tyre. The Dash lit up like a christmas tree. Steering shaft had excessive play and needed to replaced. Rim is still Ok, so yours must have been a big wack to do that sort of damage

Thanks for the contributions out there.
I still have to make sure I can get through the next trip 9000km safely without spending all of my superannuation keeping my rocket armchair on the road.
Two spares are going to be necessary.
cheers
