Well that’s my experience anyway.
Most vehicles with a slushbox do that. There is enough torque through the converter to prevent it rolling backwards. With a manual box it's an entirely different kettle of fish.

The D4 doesn’t hold with the brakes like the newer vehicles do.

I have only noticed this on manuals, not on autos.

There does appear to be a slight hesitation when you release the brakes but if the hill is steep, you'll roll backwards.

Merc have a great hold function in their autos … you even get an indication on the dash when it's engaged. You brake till the car stops and then apply more pressure on the pedal to engage the system.

Don't some of the newer D4s have a hold like function in low range? I thought I read that here somewhere.

My MY13 D4 holds on a hill for a few seconds after you release the foot brake. It will release after that pause though. Plenty of time to apply the accelerator. Standard function is my understanding.

Correct, a standard function and it works well.

    HILL START ASSIST

Hill start assist activates when the vehicle is pulling away from a standstill to ascend a hill. When the brake pedal is released, hill start assist smoothly releases the brake pressure, allowing the vehicle to pull away without rolling backward.

Hill Start Assist retains the initial driver-generated brake pressure long enough for the foot to move from brake pedal to throttle without the car rolling backwards. The brake is released after a sufficient time has elapsed or when the engine is supplying enough torque to move the car up the hill. Hill Start Assist is always available, not selectable, and neither is its operation indicated to the driver.

The other good one is this:

Gradient Acceleration Control is designed to provide safety cover on severe gradients when the driver does not have Hill Descent Control engaged. By pressurising the brake system, Gradient Acceleration Control slows the car to a limit determined by the throttle position when the car is descending the slope in the driver's intended direction of travel. This includes descending the slope forwards in drive, or rearwards in reverse. Otherwise (such as descending while facing up the gradient with Drive selected) Gradient Acceleration Control restricts speed to 5km/h (3.1mph) for up to 20 seconds, allowing the driver to regain proper control.

    Back to the EPB.

It’s a superb concept, and the newer vehicles have a much more robust version.

You can’t apply it so hard that you damage/stretch cables, or that your petite partner can’t release it.

It applies to hold each time, you can’t not apply enough.

If necessary, simply driving off enables severe ascents to be taken without rollback.

Just needs to be serviced to use, not to interval.. so if you churn mud etc for hours you need to flush it out in the drum. EPB. Why?

My opinion is that most of the electrical gee-gaws fitted to current model cars are selling tools. So opposing salesmen can engage in a ****ing contest. "Ours has more standard equipment crap on it than theirs". Most of it is unnecessary and some could be classed as unnecessary but nice to have.
