    Tyres again for the D4

So, much pondering lately about tyre's (AT's), and what to get in the way of 18's for the D4, I came across this article, which seems to be fairly well done, and quite informative,,at least to me anyway. If you haven't guessed yet,, I'm a bit lost on what to get. I viewed the Flaken's, and they seem to have a really good wrap at the moment,, but not a lot of tread depth,, which lead me to this search/page. Although dated 2014, I feel it's probably still quite relevant (?).

My 20" rims are going very shortly, and I've decided to get the TuffAnt rims now available. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but, we rather like them, having recently being able to sit a set up against the car,, thanks Dalil.

For our touring exploits, I want something which has a lot more sidewall than the 20's we currently have, and will allow us to deflate a lot more. With the 20's, I'm only comfy going down to about 25-ish,, yes, can probably go more without "too" much drama, but at 25psi, they are extremely close to being "on the rim". But not knowing how far we will be from civilization when we're out and about in earnest, I'd like to extend my chances a bit. Our experiences doing the Goog's Track last year showed me they (20's) are far from ideal "in the bush", although, towing a trailer created the problems.
I'm still yet to go and have a touchy-feely day with any yet, but will do that very shortly.

So, I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on the various range of 18's available, experiences on ride quality, toughness, safety, noise etc would all be helpful. We've got a lot of highway to do to, so not interested in MT's,, only AT's.
To make it a bit more worthwhile,, D3's and D4's only please,, ohh, ok, maybe Rangies as well .
Not really interested on how anything else goes,, apple and apples

    TIA Chops.

Hey Chops. Just keep in mind the Falken are still getting the same kilometres as others and at the moment I can get them for sub $200 each Tyres again for the D4

Even if they get 75% of the others I can get another complete set for the cost of alternatives

Yep,, I'm thinking this way too. I guess the only thing that did worry me about the Falkens was the "out of round/balancing" problem they had. Seems to be well and truly gone now though. It could have just been a batch thing I'm guessing.

    Hi Chops.

Here's a recent thread about tyres for D4 that may help.

    18in tyres for Disco4

I posted in that thread that I had just bought Michelin LTX Force tyres. I've only done about 400kms so far but fwiw I've found them very comfortable, drive very well, handle very well, no noticeable road noise (although I haven't been on highways except for Sydney motorways so no speed in excess of 90kmh) and no problems in recent wet weather here in Sydney although it wasn't heavy rain. All the reviews I read before buying were positive. My main reason for buying them was comfort for swmbo and a more rugged tyre than the oem 19" wranglers. I fitted them to Compomotive 18" rims. No one here had used them before so it was a leap into the dark buying them but I'm very happy with them so far. Obviously I can't comment on wear but from what I read they are quite long wearing. Here's a direct link to the Michelin site.

When I purchased my car I immediately purchased the MAxxis 980 tyres for 19" rims. Ist time in bush I got a nick/cut on a side wall. I found these tyres somewhat lacking in off road probably because of not being able (not wanting) to lower tyre pressure too much and damage the rims. (still managed to damage rims within 3 days of purchasing the car!!!) They have a bit of chipping. They have done 35,000kms and sit in my garage not used anymore. 16,000kms was towing a van on a mixture of bitumen and very corrugated dirt roads.

When I got my Compomotives I researched far and wide. I have bought Cooper AT on a previous vehicle and I found them expensive and not that great off road in muddy situations (Vic High country and 4WD areas around Melbourne). Mind you not the AT3 as they are now. However they were quiet on the highway. I chose BFG TA KO in the end. I also had these on my previous vehicle and was impressed with their off road ability. They are noisy but I have got used to them. I got them because their load rating was the highest (119/121) and I will be towing a caravan on most trips and also the side wall is very strong when comparing other brands. On my last trip I found them not so good in the sand as the robust construction tended to not bulge out and I had to lower tyre pressure considerably more than I would have liked to get floatation on soft sand. So far I have done about 25,000K with them. I have no chipping issues as yet on them. 14,000kms has been towing a caravan mostly on bitumen or on wet muddy main roads.

I was interested in the Nitto Grabber tyres but when I went to purchase they were out of stock, They are very cheap and have the same load rating as most of the other brands at 114. A few others here have these on their cars and have been happy with them.

When I have to replace I will look around again. Hopefully there will be more selection available as tyre sizes seem to be getting larger in diameter as the norm, and as such I am sure in a years time there will be even more available in the 18" rim size.

    Hope that helps.

Bridgestone D697 are hard to go past. Especially when they're about $250 a tyre. (I have them in 17" size but when I bought them the 18's were the same price).

There are a few good options out there. I would pick a top 3 and see what you can get a sale on.

    D4 Tyres

The D4 is a very capable off road and on road beast. If you are not into thinking that your D4 is a bulldozer, then you will not get a better tyre than the Pirelli Scorpion Verde ATR All Season. Price is similar to all other quality tyres and you will be amazed at the super quiet ride and feel, and they last forever. You'll think you have bought a new car.
