NSW and Vic have always had different rules - VIC all vehicles carry and must be able to fit. NSW - only 2wd vehicles have to carry and must be able to fit but recommend 4wds also carry but not obliged to.

Is it different in VIC?
In NSW definitely only 2wd cars have to carry chains to Thredbo and Perisher etc. 4wd cars are waived through on days they are inforcing chains.
It would be worth checking to make sure you are still required in VIC, it would surprise me that they are

So on snowy days do they MAKE the 4wds fit them as well?
That is my understanding too Gary. In VIC you must carry the chains and they must be able to be fitted. Requirement of fitting the actual chains on the day seems to be at the decision of the local National Parks or Alpine Authority - dependant on current snow and road conditons
Hi Gup,
Can I ask when you tried the snow chains on did you move the front wheels lock to lock ? Reason I ask is I tried turning the front wheels of my D4 ( 265/60 R 18 ) on full lock either side, and there was only a small clearance between the front of the tyre and the lower skirt of my Opposite Lock bull bar, and then on the other side not much clearance between the rear of the tyre and part of the subframe inside the lower rear part of the front guard.
I note from the D4 user manual its not recommended to fit chains to the rear wheels. Any idea why this is, as there is certainly more clearance on the rear wheels.

2015 D4 probably the most amazing yet, why get a RR?
On particularly bad days yes.
They will let 4WD through without chains on ( as long as they are carrying them) when 2WD have to fit them - as long as conditions are not too severe.
But yes, carrying chains that don't fit is asking to get turned around and sent home in Vic.
Also Garfield, as well as being careful about panel damage - you want to be very careful about sensor cables etc getting caught - there is very little clearance on the inside if I remember right.

Hi Garfield,
I did do the full lock and dont recall there being any issues, I have the ARB bull bar - Only front chains required for better steering control as well as traction, but again I never have got to that stage (using chains!) with driving in the snow over the last few years.
Chains sold last night so no longer available from me - sorry
