Thread: D3 2008 TDV6 Shudder!!

Simple answers to your questions.
1 - Yes
2 - yes as it makes future services easier
3 - up to you
4 - No - if you are half handy with a spanner its no a difficult job. You can drop the oil and fill which gets about 70 -80% of the oil out , a full flush gets whats in the lines and coolers out which just dropping the sump doesnt .

How many kms on the car , and has it had a trans service in the past.?

Diy flush is quite easy, a cheap 2ltr garden pump spray bottle and 3m of 10mm clear hose and 10-12ltrs of atf is all you need.
If changing the filter or fitting a steel pan adds more time but still not difficult.

For me the shudder started at around 210k. Previous owner had towed a largish caravan. After a transmission oil change and a tube of Dr. Tranny got another 20k before shudder came back. Done 5k since then and still not too bad. When topping off, the fluid needs to be between 30 and 50 degrees celsius. Here is some info.

Yes does sound like the early stages of torque converter lockup failure.

Definitely change the transmission fluid (megaflush) and I would do the pan as well but mainly to get a new fliter in it. I would also give it a dose of Dr Tranny at that time.

If you have caught it early enough you might be lucky but if not you will at least get quite a few thousand km as per Sean's experience before having to pull the box for a new TC.

At present our Disco has 120Km's - and spend it life in The Rocks Sydney and has never towed anything. So I would say we have caught it very early.

We will look at booking in for a mega flush, and report back.

Given its low kms and location I would not have thought the TC would have been an issue 9the usual cause of slip/shudder). Driving in city traffic is considered arduous use but in day to day use in the city area it not have likely got to have used the lockup function all that much - freeways and out of town for sure but in the city not likely all that much.

When you get the flush done I would be getting a professional assessment done.

It probably hasn't had a service before so hopefully you caught it in time.
