For goods with a value of AUD1000 or less, there are generally no duties, taxes or charges to pay at the border.

However, From 1 July 2018, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) may be collected by overseas vendors of such low value goods when imported from overseas by consumers in Australia. GST will be charged at the point of sale and not at the border.

For goods with a value over AUD1000, you will need to fill out an Import Declaration, and pay duties, taxes and charges at the border.

That avoids nothing these days - used to be you had to pay gst and other taxes on imports over $1000 but that $1000 limit was removed a couple of years back - in theory now payable on everything - so only ordering 3 at a time has means nothing. Thankfully the workload in checking everything means it is done randomly so often there is nothing to pay.

Buying online

Both my experience and border force say that’s wrong.

Yes I paid GST at check out but last time I also had to pay import duty on top of that

I think you may be confusing GST and DUTY

GST on everything
Duty on over $1k

Correct. So back to facts.

All overseas expenditure costs you GST now. Over $1000 also costs you import duty.

So the splitting of my purchase saved me import duty but cost me more in shipping. I worked out I was still better off.

Which is what I did in early 2019 when I ordered air struts in two consignments - front and rear separately for the same reason as you.
