I was going to preventatively replace alternator at the same time too but with the additional cost of the inlet manifold now in play, I’ll leave that a little longer.

    I reckon about $5k

When the first inlet manifold went in Feb last year, discussion was that the second one could be left for a while, but in line with wisdom here, they now recommend doing both at the same time as the second one typically goes soon after ~6 months or so. Very few kms between then and now for me
My vehicle had the first side replaced at 160k km in 2014 and the second at 254k km in 2018 so there can be quite a while between them.

Spent a couple of hours under the D4 last night replacing the temperamental AMK with its younger brother.

Easy task, cleaned the area thoroughly before install.

Also modified the compressor bash plate with more drain holes (aligned with the factory cover now) to keep build up down.

Fitted up and started vehicle to cycle suspension.

Look down and odometer reads 175,000km on the dot.

Still Genuine AMK. $800 and 5 days from UK.
Original one is 11 years old so no complaints.

So other than replacing the desiccant, I take it that it is not worth rebuilding a AMK like it is with the Hitachi. On my last Hitachi rebuild I replaced everything except the piston and conrod so next rebuild I will include those as well but it is running quite well at the moment - 15 years old, 210,000km with one rebuild.

+1 on that. I went as far as replacing the piston ring though, and just recently I pulled the compressor motor out and cleaned it up, lots of carbon build up from the brushes. 223000km and going strong.

I have done one complete rebuild on my hitachi including piston ring successfully. I have also done a subsequent desiccant refresh (oven). I will be ordering a new desiccant pack and filters for after this winter to keep it happy. It’s been good to me.

What happened to your D3/D4 today?

I have a full rebuild kit here for the AMK.
I just don’t have the time at the moment - so fixed it with cash!

I’ll rebuild it one day and use it for a secondary compressor.
