Thread: What happened to your D3/D4 today?

Driving home, today was front sway bar link day. Instead it started making a noise under power and decel. Seems my front right cv has gone on me..I think it might be my fault from heavy handling during the wheel bearing change process. Bit of grease around the inner joint.

Changed the link. Went for drive.. Clunk continues

Had my cracked windscreen replaced today.
Amazing how scratched up the old one must have been as my view is now crystal clear!

Nope, the new ball joint I pressed into the top arm is moving in the arm. Two new arms ordered. Not sure why or how.. nor do I care anymore. Just want to drive the thing not lay under it

For this reason I think my strategy for completely rebuilding the suspension in near future at 300k will be complete replacement of front upper and lower arms Meyle or Lemforder and bushing replacement only Lemforder at the rear doing also hub bushes, brake flex lines and rear wheel bearings at same time.

I've only ever done the bushes. Never an arm.. the bushes in the current arms are not old.. I'll be recovering them before the arm goes in the bin.
My lower ball joints were original and ok. I only did the lot because one upper started to move slightly

Looking for a noise in front suspension and in process found the LHF lower ball joint showing noticeable movement. Surprising, as I replaced both complete lower arms 26,000 klms ago due to the rear bushes worn, and I don't go on rough roads.

When I purchased the arms and collected them I expressed some concern to the shop that they were Britpart, and not Genuine as expected, but was assured that they were Britpart's top quality parts... "see, the writing on the boxes is all in red, which means they are their top quality parts"....

Now to fit a new Genuine ball joint...

On early Easter Monday morning my wife and I got tired of the lousy cold Southerly straight-from-Antarctica weather coming directly into our waterfront shack on the Tasman Peninsula and decided to de-camp back home at Seven Mile Beach near Hobart Airport.

During the trip home we decided to shove some clothes and food into the caravan and head to Derby on the NE of Tas where the weather was much more friendly, and do some mtb riding with one of my boys and his family who were there.
So at just on 5pm that arvo we arrived at Derby and parked beside my son after a somewhat epic trip (for a Tasmanian at least! ):

1.40 hrs from shack to home; 45 mins at home to hitch up the 3.0 tonne van; just on 3.0 hrs to Launceston (the Midlands Hwy is very slow to 60kph for many klms due to roadworks these days, and quick stop at Ross shop for coffee); re-fuel at Lonny then up the East Tamar Hwy to Bell Bay and across to Scottsdale thence to Derby, just on 1.45 hrs.

Got out of the D4 feeling great and even the missus commented that her back felt great.

Now I fully realise that the Trip Computers do read somewhat optimistic, but what price on the fact that it said 13.1 lphk?
If it was truly 15 or 16 ish I'd still be very happy, given that wherever possible I was cruising at 90-105 kph and towing 3.0 Tonnes (2960 kg at last weigh in)

I have owned L/C 80 and 100 series top of range diesels, RRS TDV8 (2009) and new Isuzu MUX (2018 6 speed auto) and without doubt the D4 does this job easier than any of them. Just ask the missus.... she hates cars and they mean nothing at all to her, but she still finds it necessary to make comment from time to time.... and on this occasion she took the trouble to compliment the Disco and remark that the trip was physically quite pleasant for a couple of oldies who won't see their 73rd and 70th birthday again....

The car did it easily and these D3/4's are quite a remarkable vehicle indeed. Love mine.

I'd have to check, either LR genuine or lemforder, I got a mix of both, the new ball joints all look to be great quality. I will confirm with the verniers when I get them out. They all had to pressed, I'm guessing one just stretched the hole a little. I might have put it in on the **** a little without watching.
