Last week, my (much loved) Land Rover Discovery4 SDV6 3.0L T/D (140,000km) seized completely in peak hour traffic without any evident signs of warning.

    Specifics:
    - Purchased at a JLRA dealership new (2017)
    - Entire service history with Land Rover at the recommended intervals and requirements
    - Most recent service being 3 weeks ago, (84 month scheduled service, $3k+) where timing belts, injector pump belt kit, gasket cover and filters etc were all replaced. No other issues identified.

Land Rover service are conducting a review of the cause at my request. Early diagnosis is that the engine is unsalvageable, mechanical failure due to 'metal decay'.

It's hard to fathom how the engine failed only a few weeks (approx. 250km driven) after the major service, particularly when no issues were flagged for attention following this service.

    Coincidence??

I have read a number of threads in the forum about this and they have been very insightful. Any thought welcome....

Update: JLRA review determined that that camshaft sprocket spokes failed due to metal fatigue. Dealer summitted a Goodwill out of warranty claim. JLRA are contributing 100% to parts (new engine $25k, ex UK reconditioned) and we are to cover the dealer labor (approx. $6k). While a lot of back and forth the decisions and outcomes were all resolved in a relatively timely manner. My only concern is now a NEW engine in a 7yo vehicle. The new engine only carries a 12month warranty. Anything I should be concerned about? Would the vehicle still be attractive on the used market if I decided to part ways?

It would certainly be more attractive than one with a locked up motor!

I think it would be more saleable than one with the original engine even if it was ok.

What happened to your D3/D4 today?

Begs the question why they can’t bring in fifty engines at a good price for affected owners.

Always welcome for a coffee (or something colder) wherever we are. The house in Tassie is only about 1/2 hour drive from the Hobart airport & 1/2 hour into the city. We'll be right at the mouth of the Derwent River on the north side. The view from the front verandah is straight across the river to Bruny Island, so we get to see all the boats in & out of the river, and Sydney to Hobart yachts sail straight past the front of our place. Nice little beach below us for fishing too - and there's always plenty of fresh oysters on the rocks.
If you intend joining we Taswegians and earning your official entry badge, then you'd best get used to your left and right, and your N/S/E/W!
You'll actually be living on the "WESTERN shore"!

    Welcome to Tassy!!

Are you able to find out what the reco engine has had done? Will it be a long motor or just the short block and all ancilliaries from your bricked motor have to be moved across? A good outcome nonetheless.

yes IMHO. more attractive at sale, when marketed to those who understand the issue.
I would like to think you would get your $6,000 investment back, in addition to what you could have expected, prior to the problem.
however, the real value is in keeping it and driving a very capable and comfortable car, with confidence. The Triple “C” in D4 motoring… haha.
    happy new year to all.

In a couple of weeks I'll provide a visual comparison between the earlier and later camshaft sprockets.

Sounds like an upgrade to do at my next timing belt service if I make it to it.
