What happened to your D3/D4 today?

Complimenting the above change, I also modified my USI-160 set up to allow solar charging of the main crank battery via the auxiliary battery without using the Shared Mode option.

My set up now has a Mini VSR in parallel to the USI-160, and then I use a relay switch activated by the ECM power to switch between the USI-160 and the Mini VSR.

I still have the option to revert back to normal set up and use the Shared Mode option, but for normal day to day use, which for me means the car gets parked up for days at a time, this set up above keeps more battery capacity in reserve.

D4 Tow Hitch Removal & Service

    Easter Greetings AULROVIANS,
I removed the standard LR D4 tow hitch from the ‘13 D4.
    Yes, the PITA one.

1.Removal : The green twist knob wouldn’t twist, so copious amounts of WD40’s Specialist Penetrant sprayed in the hole at the back, where the geared, locking bolt enters the cast hitch receptacle in the bumper. Left it for an hour and reflected on how wonderful Easter is.
Upon returning, with some twisting and pulling, the green knob freed up.
however, the tongue wouldn’t descend. I tapped downward force on the tow-ball bar, with a four pound hammer. The tongue came free.

    2. Service: I followed the VIDEO on Powerful UK for the service. I didn't need the “Land Raider” removal tool, as by now, I had the hitch out. However, it looks like a useful tool, which I will definitely need if the hitch on my D3 ever needs removing. Been in situ for many years!

    Best wishes, Jeff.

Clocked about 280km towing the tin tent down South for the last week of the school holidays. Slightly challenging with a dicey clutch but as long as I kept the "driver torque request" (as reported in the IID) below about 340NM it was ok. Not overly onerous, but gee I'm looking forward to having the clutch done (the earliest they could fit it in was the day *after* we get back).

Public holidays seem to bring out the whacko drivers.

Towed our tin tent down to Lake Colac for the Easter break with friends, uneventful apart from one DTC on the way which is leading towards HPFP replacement but once every 6 months while towing i will live with until it occurs more often.

What happened to your D3/D4 today?

The recent months has seen the calling call of a dying battery with the occasional Suspension Fault bong on startup and the recent cold mornings over the weekend saw it struggle to start.

Bosch battery was 4 years old and man at Goodchild said stay with that or go the Amaron which I have given a go.

He said 4 years was good going in a D3 as the waking up to check the suspension is effectively cycling the battery which shortens their life. Sounds like a plausible reason. If it was cranking only I’d expect 5-7 years.

Box says Lasts Long, Really Long so must be good.

Replaced a 12v socket with a double USB plug holder I 3D printed that fits the 2 plugs that came with my head unit.
And replaced the dull yellow parking light globes with LEDs.

    Back from Camping

It brought us home from our first camping trip of the season. Exceptionally quiet weekend all around as the small caravan park was less than half full Friday night and only 8 vehicles Sat nigh. Litchfield was also very quite with swimming holes easily accessed. Our last 4 hours in the caravan park were on our own - no other campers! Apparently Easter was chockers everywhere.

It is astonishing how much better a new battery is. The car literally instantaneously starts. It’s got to be a lot healthier for the engine than slightly labouring.
