Unhappy D4 Engine types - interoperability

    Hi all,
I am having a deeper look into the engines in the discovery 4s, it seems that there is a 2.7 litre turbo diesel and 2 of 3.0 litre engines (190kW and 155kW). Are the 3.0 engines the same with a different tune, or is there different ancillaries - ie different turbo set up.

I currently own a 2010 d4 which I strongly suspect has seized (it has not made it to the workshop yet), the engine in mine is the 3.0 sequential turbo version 190kW.
I am trying to understand if a 2014 155kW 3.0 can be swapped with minimal fuss.
Also can the 2.7 litre be installed in place of my 3.0 or will that be a ECU setup nightmare?

Thanks for reading, your knowledge, suggestions and links to other threads and information are greatly appreciated.

I would expect that a 2.7 could be retro fitted since it was an option in early D4s, would need at the very least the matching ecu tune.

Yeah reckon something really not good happened, was towing a van and around about 500 kms from home there was a bit of a tick tick sound which quickly became clunk clunk as there was a complete loss of power. Tried to restart after 5 mins or so and was able to hear the clunk as the engine turned over, later when the tow was there tried to turn over again and just got the sound of the starter trying to rotate crank but no rotation. I’d be happy for some one to tell me that the left headlight fluid sensor is low and that is the reason that all of this is happening but I will hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

    She’s cactus, sorry.

There’s no easy or cheap fix for a 3L I’m sad to say. The engine isn’t commonly used and the alterations made by JLR to fit it to the Discovery aren’t done to any other 3L where it was used.

I’m sad to say that most are scrapped unless the manufacturer kicks in to help - in very few cases.

Swapping to 2.7L is just not done as the engines, harnesses etc are so different.

I expect mine will become scrap and be parted out of it does fail in the same way.

Talking with DazzaTD5, he's contemplating a 2.7 refit into a buggered 3.0 if he can find a suitable donor just to see how difficult it is and whether economic if its possible/realistic.

while not what I am wanting to hear, thanks for the feedback. What is known of the two of types of 3.0 litre engines, are they the same other than the ancillaries, enabling a direct swap of the long motor of a suitable later model TDV6 wreck can be found?

I haven’t a clue about other 3L engines, but it’s noted that in the inclusion of the 3L in the disco, LR made changes to the sump, oil scavenging and other things to accommodate the angles seen by the disco during 4WDing so you’d need to be mindful of that when swapping components etc.

Oh, note the 3L TD and SD engines are identical other than tune so if you found either you could do a swap easily.
