If you hadn't been fiddling with the damn thing in the first place Gavin, when you should have been concentrating on your driving, none of this would have happened and your dearly beloved would still be happy with the D4...... maybe anyway.

Great outcome - so that is a new trap and simple fix to remember. Surprised a hard reset did not fix it.

Normally you wait for the car to go to sleep (park brake light turns off) - then disconnect battery and short cables for a few minutes to discharge all capacitors and clear memory banks - then wait another 5-10 mins before reconnecting.
Not sure if the extra 5-10 mins though is truly needed once all internal stored power has been discharged.
Always love a good mystery (especially when it is not my own car - heh heh) and by rights doing a hard reset for a few minutes should of had the same effect as pulling fuse 17 for a few minutes.
I suspect you still have an intermittent problem waiting to come back - but I won’t tell anyone when you are trying to sell the D4. For now just have to put it down to “Don’t try to connect the GAP tool when driving”.
Brilliant that Darren made the connection to the Keyless Vehicle Module needing a reset.
P.s. Gavin - you should provide GAP Diagnostics feedback by e-mail on the outcome so they can add to their own knowledge base.
Excellent suggestion and done.
Patrick re-iterated that you can connect with ignition already on, and I replied as follows
Yes we understand it is feasible to connect with the ignition on, but the feeling is that idiots like me could possibly try to insert at an angle and potentially short out pins – unlikely, but I for one don’t plan to take any more chances, given this is the second occasion that I have shorted everything out, even though incident 1 was traced back to bad pin connections in the ABS ECU.

How does that logic play?
Bride wants an unknown piece of equipment to replace one that may need a $1000 repair. (Or someone who doesn’t plug things in whilst driving)
