    Spare tyre winch

Hi everyone I have a query about the spare tyre winch for discovery 4.

I accessed the spare tyre for the first time and I cannot get it to wind up again, interestingly it will wind up if I apply hand tension but the weight of the tyre stops it. So I took it off, pulled it apart and there is no jamming, it just seems to slip as soon as the weight goes above a certain point and it wont wind up. You can reduce the weight and it works fine, it doesn't seem overly clogged, pretty clean inside.

Looks like not a well designed unit, I can see from a brief look online these units are problematic, and a common part to replace.

Is there an improved unit to buy? I see there are ones on ebay that all look like this unit Spare Tire Wheel Winch For Land Rover Discovery Range Rover Sport LR039486 6941689818071 | eBay

I'm not super keen on looking at a genuine one for this part given they seem to have such a high failure rate. But does anyone have any suggestions.

I guess the only way to rid the spare tyre winch is a RWC!

Not sure what is wrong with yours but when wound up with the wheel on they dont give any problems.
I wouldnt touch that ebay one, made in china and it has no hex to put a wheel brace or socket onto.

They're a woeful design. Usual woe is jamming, you're special! Occasional talk of motorisation options but I believe they're addons rather than substitutes

My replacement one does the same. I have a ratchet strap under the rear. Good holes to mount it in. Been there for about 5 years. Slips going up so I helped it up. Used the strap to keep it tight

My D3 has lost its virginity - spare wheel winch

Rebuilt mine for the D3 with a old fashioned chain winch many years ago - worked perfectly even when caked in mud - never let me down .. sold the car a few years back.

Might redo on my D4 now 🧐

Same. I used a chain winch from a Triton, with some brackets etc required so I can access it from underneath.

The LC 200, has a chain, and the winch is accessed not from the load area of the vehicle, well thought out.And it has a real jack, not something suitable for a Yaris.

LR could have done so much better with the winch and jack set up.In fact the jack isn't really fit for purpose, yet the new Defender has one the same.

    D4 Spare Wheel winch

    Learning the hard way.

Didn't put the spare back up under when I had the flat. It seems that will mess up the whole winch.

Got the one off ebay - yes made in China, and it only went half way up then then no more. Makes a clicking sound like it has reached the end of it's spool.$125 down the drain.

Shall now try 4wd Industries at Rutherford, NSW for their advertised one at $350 - will ring first though to check with them. Although might try to crack the old one open to see if it is fixable by me. From the other threads it seems it can be.

    Any more advice appreciated.
