Not convinced on the centre of chassis rail either.

What home job requires more lift than the above?
Anything that requires the wheels off the ground or more clearance than you can get at max suspension extension. I always do it for brake / steering work. Makes wheel change easy also.

I'd never lift from the diffs, but the landrover manual shows the jacking points at the center of the chassis side rails and I've always done it that way with no issue.

I have 4 big jack stands, then I place 4 backup stands, plus the wheels under the body. I still get nervous working under it but the extra height makes some stuff quite a bit easier, especially up around the bellhousing and gearbox/transfer case.

At least once a year I'd have all 4 wheels off the ground. Sure, I could probably do it one at a time, but it's so much faster to just lift it up, work and drop it down. No room for a hoist at my place.

Just in case people aren't aware, the manual also has 2 jacking points 'front and rear' for a symmetrical lift. The front one is the centre of the cross member at the front of the stock engine undershield. I have a trade tools 2 tonne jack with 'only' 465mm lift. TradeTools | Huge Range, Great Service

Never had any problems getting the wheels off the deck with it. Suspension to offroad height, remove suspension fuse, jack under front or rear central point, lift, insert stands either side. Never had a problem yet, and its a nice strong double cylinder jack... (standard 19 inch wheels...)

I did check manual and only the 4 points are listed as jacking points.

Good to know about the middle ones and glad it was tried by someone else.

Here you go: front and rear from the manual:

(the rear one is a bit of a bugger in that it's quite far 'in' under the vehicle, and it's easy to foul the jack on the spare wheel - take the time to get it right before heaving on the jack handle...)

And here are the asymmetric lhs/rhs points:

Don't know what brand this is or where I got it from - I've had it for years. Lifts to 505mm from the floor. It will easily pick up either end of the Disco (used to pick up my F100 with Chev V8 diesel without any problems), but I only ever lift the D4 one corner at a time under the control arms and install jack stands. No good for taking out bush though. It is a heavy old beast of a thing, and those steel wheels are useless on anything other than a concrete floor.

Unless I need to pull wheels off though, if I want to get underneath it for other reasons I have a pair of heavy duty steel ramps. I raise the suspension to off-road height, drive the end I want to work under up onto the ramps and leave the driver's door open.
