    D4 MY14 TDV6 misfire

    Hi all
Long time follower of the forum, first time poster.

Our Discovery 4 developed a slight miss a few weeks ago. No noticeable loss of performance, increased mileage or smoke, but on a cold start there's a definate clapping of either an injector or lifter (prob a lifter tbc) for a few seconds around the cyl 4 area, and it is slightly lumpy through all revs/loads. To be fair there is a slight tick with engine running but not really noticeable.

I did a relative comp test- all good, and i invested in a GAP iid tool but being that the car is MY14 it turns out fuel trim data isn't available. Scan shows no faults.

My next step was to try one of the LR specialists in Sydney but i'm looking at late June-July before anyone can get me in. I've alway done my own spanner work so i don't have a relationship with anyone unfortunately

I've struck out finding anyone reporting this issue on an MY14+ on the forums, so am reaching out in the hope someone can point me in the direction of a next step.

    Many thanks
    John

If you passed relative compression. You can try to rule out an injector by swapping it out with one on the other bank to try to move the noise significantly. The gap tool will allow you to swap the trim codes and leave it in the new position if it doesn't help. While it's out you can put a bore scope in the hole to have a look if need be. You should be able to get new injector washers locally to do that job.

Perhaps related, the rear timing chains (from outer cam to inner cam) do rattle on start up for a few seconds before full oil pressure is achieved up there. Could be stretched chains....

I would have thought the injector pulse rate is too fast to be able to hear individual cycles.

Cold starts on cold mornings - try two or three glow plug cycles before you start to see if this improves matters - maybe a glow plug issue.

Update of sorts. The car broke down on my wifes trip to work about 5 mins from home this morning. Shes a bit vague but says the miss was noticably louder and power was down so she pulled over and turned it off. It now wont turn over. I flat towed it home and have observed as follows.
    - engine turns over as normal with a breaker bar
    - torque converter is turning with the rest of the crank, this doesn't rule out a broken crank though 14+ TDV6 crank failures are more or less unheard of
-starter solenoid is throwing and starter motor is heating up with power applied
-Battery voltage drops to 11.8v with starter engaged- aok
-No fault codes on GAP other than those related to nuetral override and fail to start
Not looking for advice here just updating for those playing along at home. If there are any 14+ owners or techs out there who have experienced similar please chime in. Other than that I'll tap out on here but will provide an update as and when this is resolved, thanks

All the 3L D4 do cranks - even the last 16.5 have done cranks. That said this doesn’t sound like that.

Gave the oil filter a wash out- large volume of ferrous metal- no white metal. I'll work out how to get a photo up later
I'll scope the bores and report back, if anyone has suggestions on who/what/where for a short motor i'm all ears. I certainly dont have the gear or time to take this on
