    Front undertray on D3

    Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I took over ownership of this beauty (? beast) from another AULRO member last month.

It's a 2007 D3 V8 HSE with 225,000 on the clock and a full service history. It drives beautifully and it sounds awesome. Fuel consumption is heavier than I'm used to, but is not terrible if I drive with the windows up (fewer dopamine-releasing auditory stimuli).

It's been introduced to the local indie who did a service, LCAs, rear sway bar bushes, front door actuator and front pads. He thought it was a good specimen for its age and mileage.

The indie also said the front undertray is missing, and that I could get a replacement from a wrecker. My questions are:

    • what is the front undertray and what does it do?
    • will something really bad happen if I don't get a replacement?
    • which wrecker would I approach to get a replacement?

Welcome and good luck with the new car. The undertray protects the front diff and sump from the usual off-road bumps and scrapes and I'd recommend fitting one. It may also help with fuel economy as air can pass under the car with less turbulence. I'm not sure if V8 and diesel trays are the same. If they are, there should be some available from members on here who have replaced theirs (predominantly diesel I would suspect) with APT or similar aftermarket ones which give better protection for serious off road driving.

    Hey welcome on board,

APT ones would be good. Quality wise wouldn’t be any less than the rock sliders you’ve got on it already. Front undertray on D3 it’s the front bit where the oil filter sits so if you’d want to specifically cover that part otherwise you can opt for the whole underbody cover.
