I think you are confusing the Diesel Particulate Filter with the Catalytic Converter. You won't have a DPF on your car. It is, as you say, a muffler like item with pipes and wires going into it. The Cat is like a mini muffler or a large olive joint. Raise the car to off road height and look under the passenger door at the exhaust. The bulge you see will be the Cat. If you had a DPF it would sit a little further along the pipe.

I knew this model doesn't have a DPF as I've owned one that had. My earlier 2009 Build MY10 did. Fun fact - You don't actually need to get under the car to work out if your D4 has a DPF or not. Simply start it in your garage. DPF ... very, very low odor...almost a sweet smell. No DPF .... stinky standard diesel smell .

I've had a crawl under the car now...can't believe it, I've been under this thing cleaning it so many times and have never noticed the "mini-muffler", near the transmission sump, upstream (closer to the engine) of where the exhaust becomes one before going into the big fat muffler. In my defense, it's hidden by a cross member and bash plate.

I guess that's the CAT? I'm assuming there is one on each side of the exhaust, as the exhaust is a split system upstream of this point and only one section of pipe on the LHS of the car goes into that device?
