I would pull the plugs from the height sensors anywhere near where you have been playing, check for corrosion, bent pins, or anything else stuck in there, then reseat each one.

Once happy everything is plugged in correctly, try a total system reboot - disconnect any Aux battery you have, trailer anderson plug connected etc.
Then disconnect the main battery, and touch the leads together (not shorting the battery here, just the battery leads)

This should reset the computer systems, and rule out any gremlins that may be lurking in the settings / config...

    OK, more playing.

Pulled the height sensor, caused an error, and then no more 'extended mode' so that's good.

Redid the connector joint, pretty sure that's not leaking. But the air bag deflates within a couple of minutes if the car isn't running.

Both front air struts are weeping oil on the shocks, so can this cause a leak in the bag itself. They've got about 50k kms on them.

    Regards

From memory I get a similar message when moving to and from TTM (Tight Tolerance Mode for wheel alignment etc) (MY14 D4).

    A major breakthru!!!

I started looking at the air spring instead of the connector, and low and behold, there is a major leak from the shock top nut. It was very loose and has been tightned at least 1 full turn, cant get it any tighter. There is still a small leak but at least the compressor might get some relief.

Question is, remembering I'm at Karratha, is it reasonable to think that a competent mechanic can remove the strut and replace the "o ring" at the top? Is it a normal o ring?

Holiday may not be ruined just yet!

    Regards
    Trevor

There are 3 o-rings IIRC. Just tighten the nut, which will require a hex driver or Allen key to hold the shaft so that the nut can be fully tightened.

    Edit: not hex (that's L322).

I'm bringing a roadtrain up thru that way , pretty sure I have a drop off in karratha, I do have a used front and rear air strut that if you need I can throw in the truck. I dont leave till mid morning tomorrow so realistically it would be friday as I'm oversized load but if it helps I will bring a strut with me. Pretty sure D3/D4 have the same struts.

Given you've been pumping incalculable quantities of air through the drier, you'll want to put a drier rebuild on your "after holidays" todo list.

    It's sounding positive though.

Correct, the EAS defaults into dealer mode, sits on the bump rubbers.

Yep, was going to say you've got a leaking airbag. Surprised it stays up a few minutes. Best bet is a replacement strut, especially if you've got oil leaking from the damper. Easy enough to change out, just make sure they have a torque wrench that goes to 350Nm. You need the bottom bolt to be at 300Nm. You can reuse the old bolts. I've got spare bolts if you need.

Thanks to everyone for the help and offers of parts.
I hope to have enough of a seal to get to Canarvon over the next couple of days. Then I'll probably order a couple of new struts, hopefully they won't take too long. I usually get parts from UK within a week to the NSW South Coast.
    How long to Canarvon?
    Regards
    Trevor
