I haven't heard of doing both being cheaper, as there aren't a lot of common parts to be removed - doing both is about twice the price of doing one.

Most of the time the LHS goes first, and if it does, the RHS will almost certainly fail in the future. If you plan to keep the car, I would just do both and sleep/drive easier, knowing you're good for quite a while. This is what I did.

And yep, I had the same 'I don't know if I can trust you now' moment with the car, but i look at it this way - the part failed for me when we were on holiday, towing a camper trailer. It was a pain, down on power etc etc, but it didn't stop us doing everything we wanted - still got there, camped, drove on the beach, and drove home again, still towing.
Many thanks - will do both for peace of mind.

    Happy trouble free future travels.

Like you said could it be the intercooler pipe?

We will be doing the oil filter/cooler/separator "o" rings as suggested and I have requested 'Genuine' parts. However, I am relying on the mechanics here in terms of what needs to be done - verbally quoted $5.9k for the whole job (plus GST?).
Although I have no idea of current workshop labour rates on the mainland these days ($180 per hr??) my initial thought is that $5.9k is a bit high. Google TR Spares in NSW and you'll see the manifolds are around $700 each, they show the oil cooler at about $400 and the separator seals are about $20 each (x3). Plus injector seal kit (x2) at around $60 each, and misc "O" rings on inlet "Y" manifold etc at around $80.

Closer to $5k would be nearer the spot i'd think.

My understanding is that 2 days labour would pull it up. I'll know next week as I am getting mine done.

Being turbo'd, the inlet manifold is under positive pressure, which is why it blows oil out of the crack. The ECU detects this loss of positive pressure in the manifold and initiates the reduce performance protections.

FWIW,I was going through some old invoices, and noticed LR charged me $220/hr in 2012.

That was my last visit ever. The same year, local Indie was $105/hr,and their workmanship was well over twice the quality.

The above info by Chris is correct, the other info being a vacuum is not correct.

a turbo is called forced induction for a reason... it forces air down the throat of an engine

Which is a good thing here, as I take that to mean there isn't the risk of 'dusting' your engine with this crack

Thanks Discodicky - All done...Both manifolds replaced including oil cooler, 'O' rings, piping, etc. happy with the final bill that
all seems to be within quoted market guidelines for Sydney region....totaled $6.5k including regular service and gst - no worries.

My indie mechanics are top shelf LR specialists and really know their stuff - excellent job very well done!

PS A simple detergent spray quickly proves the presence of a manifold leak due to expulsion of pressurized air released (when rev'ed) - got a bum steer from somewhere else and had it wrong re: vacuum.

Yes mate. From a vacuum perspective, the crack will close up and seal so while you’re cruising off boost, it will be fine. It’s anytime you go positive pressure that you leak.

The problem with these forums is while they are informative they also enlighten concerns, my passenger side manifold has been replaced 180km so now I’m worried about the driver side. I might hold off to Christmas holidays and have a crack at it myself
