    D3 with Territory Engine

Planning to sell my D2 with 345000km and looking at D3 with engine already replaced with Territory engine. We do have D4 sdv6 as daily car.

Is the territory engine more reliable dan don’t have the same issue like tdv6 on D3? The territory has done just around 100000km on D3.

    Thanks

    Interesting question.

We have a Territory re-powered D3 ourselves, seems to be going along ok.

I have searched a few times as to reliability and haven't found any that have failed after fitment into a D3.

There doesn't seem to be any logic to this though, as they are the same motor.

The only "unknown" is if there was an assembly error at the plant LR got engines from, or an issue with the cranks they used vs the Territory.

More likely would be that they will fall, bit there isn't a big enough sample size of re-powered D3s with the Territory engine.

I also think that the failed 2.7 seem to be about 95% oil pump related, so less of an issue than what the 3.0 has.

No doubt someone with much more experience than myself will say that just as many of the 2.7 break cranks as the 3.0.

There is logic, same motor but different generation.
By the time it was fitted to the territory it had been around for over 7 years so they fixed the oil pump casting and probably had better quality control by then.

Just curious how much will it cost to put territory engine in D3 and which garage in Melbourne can do it?

I was referring more to crank related problems, but your logic probably fits that as well.

To pay a workshop to do it probably close to 10k, motors can be found for as little 2-3K if you are keen on a weekend project.

I believe that there were far more diesel SZ Territories sold in Australia than there ever were D3s, and while this anything but definitive, I have not heard of Lion engine failures in the Fords. Territories had a curb weight of about two tonne. A heck of a lot of them tow.

The engine failed on one of the first while being driven by a motoring writer.

They sold about 60,000 of the things, so one failure of what was likely a pre production unit is hardly indicative. But I get what you are saying. It took LRA three L663s to get one to complete a tame off road test for another motoring writer. Even ( whisper it) Toyota has had failures this way.

I in no way say the Lion in the Territory was perfect but they sure seem better than the LR ones... or maybe Ford did better with their warranties. Of course, Ford also didn't use the 3.0 twin turbo time bomb.

I guess if they came from the same factory as LR then they will have the same weaknesses and it comes down to vehicle weight. I had a SZ Territory diesel i did 200km in, only things I replaced were consumables, very easy car to drive, economical and incredibly reliable. I think a LR D4 is another 5-600kgs but many owners, like me, will add on stuff like front bar, roof racks etc so maybe 1000kg more, which may be the difference. The Territory has a terrible tune with turbo lag etc so that may help it's longevity compared to the extra power of the 3.0ltr? Who knows.
