    Car security

With the recently reported increase in vehicle thefts I'm interested in fitting an OBD2 lock to my vehicle. What experience have other had with one of these locks. What is the best brand that fits our vehicles?
    Looking forward to your input.

2017 vehicles from memory are already OBD2 locked (the KVM module is locked to prevent further access) - hence why theft is often Home Invasion and Keys taken.

Also, I'm pretty sure that if they are sophisticated enough to steal your car via the OBD2 port they will be able to get around some aftermarket junk. It's pretty easy to simply piggyback another port onto the car's wiring. Crude, sure.

Plenty of LC200s being stolen ATM without the vehicle keys, there were three on forums last week,Melbourne area.Others the last few months.

From what i can gather they use three ways, and these are probably not kids taking it for a joy ride.

Use a relay box to amplify the key signal from a key located inside a residence.Keeping the keys in a Faraday pouch is an easy way to stop this.
Smash the front side window, climb in and access the OBD port.
Access the vehicles wiring another way, sometimes through the tailight and get the vehicle to start. This may only be applicable to certain models and brands.

A kill switch is probably the go,or as we had years ago,a coded module, but a good thief can probably get around these. They usually have a solenoid in the fuel line.
    Or the old Club lock.
Lots of other electronic alarms and trackers around.

Anyway,it looks like the scumbags are working out new methods to steal them all the time.

A few of the guys on the UK D3 forum relocate the OBD2 port and replace it with a socket that has power only. No connection to any of the CAN busses. So the crims break in, plug in their widget which powers up but does nothing.

They're not going to remove panels and ferret around behind the console looking for the hanging port.

I always though it would be cool to have the dummy port put a couple of thousand volts on the CAN lines, but knowing my luck I'd forget and plug my IID in there.

I'd be the idiot that does that, forgets about it, and in years from now when ****ing up crossing some deep river manages to electrocute himself in a diesel car.

To discourage theft for long term use, I just leave the invoice for my last repairs and maintenance bill on the front passenger seat or dashboard.

    Another late model LC200,last night.
Copy and paste off another site.
They may soon overtake Dunny Dores as the go to for thieves.

My Auto elecy uses a hidden kill switch that drops the power to the main ECU.Sounds probably the go.

" they didnt have my keys. Car was fully locked. I have camera footage of a guy breaking the window and spending upwards of 15 minutes inside the car then the car turns on and he drives away.. seems they have technology or were able to Hotwire it. Pretty disappointing that the alarm wouldn’t go off "

Edit, the alarm will go off if the door is opened from inside, when the vehicle is locked, like most vehicles,so the thief either disabled the alarm,or climbed through the broken window.

I had one of those most stolen Commodores, IIRC the trick was to break the little rear passenger window then reach in and remove the interior light bulb, which stopped the circuit being made when the door was opened. Probably would have to climb through the windows nowadays as there's so many interior lights.
