Range Rover TD6 vs RRS TDV6

I have been looking at Range Rover Sports TDV6 with a view to upgrade from my Freelander. Obviously looking for as cheap as possible with less than about 70,000km. There are a few about but the cheapest RRS are the V8s and black in colour.

While looking I have also come across a couple of low KM Range Rover L322 HSE 05MY TD6s for about the same price as 05/06MY RRS TDV6.

How do the two compare as vehicles. Clearly the RRS is a little newer design wise with 6 speed vs the RR HSE 5 speed and newer interior. (I appreciate the RR went through a major update for the 06MY).

How does the 3 litre BMW six in the RR compare with the 2.7 TDV6 or even the much newer 3.0 TDV6. I assume the diff problems in the RR was fixed by the 05MY.

Any other pros or cons - RRS does seem to be holding its value better than the RR but maybe not an issue buying a 5 yo version. I would not go earlier that about 05MY for the RR HSE.

    Cheers

There are MY05 L322s having the diff recall done now - I'm not sure when it was sorted but LR Aus is changing them. Once the recall is complete the car has the same Diff as later MY07 cars.

MY06 upgrade was virtually only cosmetic for the diesel variants, it wasn't until the release of the tdV8 that the diesel RR received the full upgrade.

I'm in the process of this same decision. In standard form the RRS has a bit more power (140-130) and torque (440-390) and as you mentioned an extra gear, the 2.7 is IMO is a little quieter. They are pretty much the same weight (RRS 2425 - 2400kg???) so the RRS should be a little more responsive to drive. The RRS has significantly less internal space. RRS has Terrain Response which L322 didn't get until the tdV8. RRS models seem to be, on average better equipped - 02 to 05 L322 HSE had a few options to tick, and from what I see not many were ticked..

L322 originally had BMW electronics. They were gradually changed between 04 and 06, so vehicles in this range will have a mix of BMW and Ford, and yes it's a mix, they were gradually changed, so these vehicles actually have 2 Bus Systems for the computers - 1 BMW & 1 Ford (CAN). I'm not sure that's a big problem, but it does make it interesting when looking for a diagnostic kit for home, you would need to know exactly what you have.

A big one for me is the stupid folding towbar on the RRS, L322 has a old fashion solid tow point.

You can retro-fit the MY2010 tow system to the older RRS/D3's - it's a bit better than the older ones, as it does not hang down so low.

Is it still a folding arrangement?

Not quite sure what you mean by 'folding'?

The hitch/receiver slots and locks into the underside of the chassis bar (where the recovery point is). So it's 'removable', but I wouldn't call it 'folding'??

    Hi there

do you have any more information on this. I have a 05 one and the local dealer is claiming not to know about any recall. Any information from anyone would be greatly appreciated

When I purchased my L322td6 in 2005 I took both it and the RRS for a drive to compare.

The RRS is horrible to sit in! It feels like a cocoon and I'd imagine it would be very uncomfortable after a long trip.

Also when taking both vehicles over a rutty paddock at some speed the L322 thrashed the RRS for comfort.

The RRS appeared to have a better performance.

6 speed v 5 speed transmission - who cares? - in the L322 one never knows which gear its in anyway!

I know this thread has long been left alone, I am experiencing the same dilemma.

TD6 HSE L322 or TDV6 L320? What do you imagine the highest kilometre Sports to be like - troublesome? Done some research and the L322 seems the way to go although it is getting outdated and the mileage of some on carsales scares me away a little bit.
