Hi Rim,
In relation to the UHF I have the icom-440 which has the remote mic including speaker. When they installed it the main body was placed behind the lower trim on the passenger side foot well (door side) and the mic which comes with a 2.5M extension lead just pocked out from the bottom corner of the center console on the drivers side (where the carpet meets the console). Very neat and tidy and use's up no space. then stuck the mic mount on the side of the console with double sided tape.
As for repairs in the bush it has been a challenge. As most of our travels have been on the west coast (now in Darwin) service center's are few and far between so there has been some doubling back. Most people just look at it and walk away. It has also had 2 trips on a flat bed.
Just yesterday I replaced the 2 front air struts due to the left front failing, mind you it has now covered 165,000KM so it was expected at some stage. The local Darwin LR dealer wanted way to much for the parts and labour. Tried a couple of independent mechanics and they showed little interest as well, mainly due to the fact they only work on earlier models.
There have been several times in the last few weeks were I almost traded it for a Toyota 200 series, but I have come to my senses and am sticking with the Rangie.
All I can say is that if you are going to travel remote with one of these things do as we have, carry a sat phone an 'e'perb a UHF, spare fuel and oil filters and service it yourself.
Regards
Tunny
