Flip key conversion for pre 2005

Hi everyone, thought I would share my success with this..
As in the title this is to convert a key from the old style BMW key to a new flip key, its NOT for a replacement.. got all the info on a UK forum so praise should go to them..

So I ordered this key from Range Rover Flip style Remote (Replace the Remote head Key) 433mhz **auto keys,transponder keys, remotes control,locksmith tool,chrysler fobik supplier, making sure its the 433Mhz... Asked for the FAT style blade (wide type B format) as the UK forum received the slim stlye blade and for the key to Not be glued..

I order two ($88 for keys and postage) and they arrived in about 5 days to Tassie, which it very quick..

I had to try several Locksmiths until I got someone to cut the new blades. lucky there was just such a place here and he only charged me $10 to do them both..

Pull apart your old key to get the transponder, it's under the circuit board.
Put transponder from old key into new key, it goes up the front under the circuit board, the thin end (near the flip key spring) with the black looking chip on it, this it the battery charging coil, the transponder chip must go here or your battery wont charge! (one of my new keys had a new transponder chip already there so I put mine there in its place, the other didn't ??). Put new cut blade in. Put cable tie back on, don't glue anything till ur sure it all works. The flip key is fiddly cause u have to put it on the spring and wind it (you'll know what I mean)
Follow the reprogramming sequence:
Programming a new Key

1) Get in and close all doors. Turn ignition on and off quickly and remove the key (all within about 5 seconds). (Don't start the car, just turn until dash lights are on)

2) Within 30 seconds of turning the ignition off, while holding down the "unlock" button, press the "lock" button three times. Release the "unlock" button. (You may or may not get the confirmation from the door locks they should lock and then unlock.) Holding the key at your head level provides best results as the key sensor is in the side window pillar.

3) Repeat for each key you want to initialize within 30 seconds after the last one you initialized (if you have more).

4) Right after doing the last key, quickly put the key back in the ignition and turn it on/off again .

Some work first time and some take several attempts but listen for the door locks to cycle then do the same on the original key.
Mine all worked first time

Put in ignition,

Go for drive to charge it.

Now under take this at your own risk!! I was successful and have had no problems.. others on the other forums in the UK have had some issues though..
If all is going smoothly and you are ready to glue the case shut , sand around the lip on each side of the case so the glue has a nice rough surface to bond to..

Nice one, interesting it allowed the remote part of the flip key to program to the car, am surprised it worked given the flip one is a whole different manufacturer etc but is obviously working on exact same standard.

Must admit to being sceptical myself about the remote part being able to be programmed to the car but thought I would give it a go!! turns out getting the blade cut was the hard bit..

Well, thanks to Radix, I too have a flip key for my RR.

I bought 2 keys for ~$100, once postage was factored in. Like Radix, finding a place to cut the key was by far the biggest challenge. No one in Canberra would touch it. In the end, I took it with me on an interstate trip and found a place in Adelaide (Marion locksmiths), who would cut is for $60 per key.

I swapped the transponder with one from an unused original key - I was fortunate to have 3 OE keys - and hey-presto, it worked!

The synchronising 'ritual' was necessary and needs to include every key you intend to use with the car. I learned this the hard way, so tip for all those who follow this thread.. It also helps to place the keys near your mouth when synchronising, seems to be more effecient.

So if you were wondering - it works and for about $100 / key, I think it is money well spent. Thanks Radix!

OK just a couple of questions on this -

key cut $60 each - should that be $6 each?

When I still had my original 2 keys that came with the truck each upon unlocking the truck would respectively activate memory 1 and 2 automatically as if those memory buttons were pressed by finger. My dealer lost one of our keys during a service visit.
I guess I need to obtain an original transponder for my truckif I wish to recover those capabilities with 2 keys.

If you can get em cut for $6 each, let me know where. It costs about that now for a front door key to the house. There are not many places that can cut a lot of these modern car keys, and the places that do know how to charge...

Have you not read Radix's 8th June post??

I'll copy it for you if you have not -

My maths tells me that it works out at $5 each so if you are getting charged $6 for a house key you are getting ripped off!!!!!

$5 each?

again in Adelaide, goodwood locksmiths quoted $50 a key if I prvided the blank blade, they quoted $18 for the blank.

They couldn't give me a transponder chip though so I never bothered chasing it.

First place I tried was going to charge $35 for each key, when I took the new blades in they said they were unable to do it because they didnt have the die to hold the orginal key.. The place that cut my blades used a 20yr old machine, nothing special at all, and yes he only charged me $10 to do both blades..(me suppling the blankes that came with the new key)
