    Considering an l322

    Hi everyone.

    I seem to be going through cars quickly lately, and I seem to own 3 cars at a time - a daily driver, a track car, and an offload car.

    Went from a p38 with never ending oil and exhaust leaks, the occasional air suspension and hevac system errors.... To a classic with plenty of wear and tear on components...
    And both cars were 14-15l/100km plus on fuel.

    Looking at diesel l322, they seem to be coming down in price these days. Then I can use it daily with some off road duties, and bring my total at count down to 2 (keeping my track car too)

    What are the common issues with these models and what should I look for in one?

    There has been plenty of discussion on this in the past. If you want to really do your homework, then run a search here and also on Full Fat RR and start reading....

    If you are buying an 02-05 model - and I guess that's what you are looking at when you say the prices are coming down, then the following is my advice...

    In short, look out for the transmission. If it hasn't failed and been rebuilt on the vehicle you are looking at, then it will - allow $7K for the repair to be done properly. Even if it has had the trannie rebuilt, I would look closely at what has been done to it. To be on the safe side, haggle another $5K off the asking price straight away to cover this.

    Apart from that, the front airbags will give out between 160 and 180KKM but these aren't hard or particularly expensive to change.

    Look for a good service history - the engines are pretty bulletproof if serviced regularly.

    Suspension rubbers are all starting to show their age on the early models too.

    The compressor will also be on its last legs as it approaches 200KKM as well.

    So, apart from the trannie - mostly wear and tear items. These are great cars, but as the KM climb on them - like any car - they will need a bit of TLC, but parts are readily available and not too expensive.

    Buy one and you'll be hooked - they are awesome...

    Yep, everything that bacicat said, I spat it when my 2004 td6 did a gearbox and transfer case in one hit, 25,000km and 10 months later and I always look forward to driving it, yes, they are awesome, and unreal in the bush as a standard vehicle..

    Looking at cars with prices sub 25k with less than 180000km.

    I'm in WA, but the rangies here a grossly overpriced. (No decent diesel models sub 30k)

    So I will be flying over and driving one back

    all of the above is good advice. If I hadn't bought the LS430, I would have had an L322 Td6. Hands down.

    Make sure all door locks work,try them several times.Check steering column retracts smoothly,no sqeaks.Beautiful to drive

    Moving on from my 02 to an 06

    My L322 HSE is a dream compared to many others I have owned including a Disco (sorry disco owners!). I have replaced as part of normal servicing the front suspension, compressor, battery, airbags and controllers. I also had to replace a passenger door due to a vandal.I have changed the oil in the transmission twice in the last 2 services at a cost of over $400. My RR has been the best and least expensive to own.

    Moving to an 06 part 2.

    My L322 is a TD6 as well. The petrol cars are too thirsty to consider as a third car as it is for us.

    Following this thread with interest too.
    Bacicat put the idea in my head last week about an l322; was just going to run the p38 out of km.
    Quite concerned about the diesel gearbox. What about the v8 on injected lpg?

    Sorry to diverge.

    If you can find a V8 on gas that has been done well, then there shouldn't be too many dramas I wouldn't think. The gearboxes in the V8's are better, but not without some issues. The TD6 will outlive the V8 by miles but the V8's are nice to drive...
