Ok, Had some fiddling time to re work the rear tilt latch and hinge.

I ditched the bolt idea as it just yielded to much movement to close to the pivot point and went for a very very robust lever type latch that is rather more complicated.

There is a rod that is now connected to the base of the handle (inside the vertical box section) that simply pushes up the latch to release the tyre. The spring force is high, i even had to revert to a smaller spring from the previous deign. And the limit strap is now a solid sliding bar rather then a flexible cable.

a bit more cleaning up and filling in the old holes is still required haha.

The operation is extremely smooth and easy

    Thumbs up Rear Bar

    Looks fantastic,
Great to finally find someone that is willing to modify an L322 and get it dirty.
Going the full width is neat but seams an overkill for one spare. Would it have been better (though more work) to swing from both sides and add an extra wheel or jerry can etc.Could have still had a door type of catch or two in the centre, even working off the central locking.
Im working on some side steps/rock sliders for my 03 L322.
Looking to see the final product.

I have considered this, but I feel it would be to much effort to open 2 swings, then the 2 rear doors. It would ruin the whole quick and easy approach to getting in the back.

This is my use of the spare wheel well.
Left, 10L water tank and pump (Hose hides in L.H side floor cubby hole)
Rear center, thumper air compressor surrounded with foam sheets for noise.
Center center, 2nd deep cycle battery, yet to wire (First is in the normal spot on R.H side)
Center front, Air tank from truck with pressure sensor set to 90psi. (air outlet in same L.H side floor cubby hole and airhorns up the front)
Right, relocated the compressor using the original 2 R.H bolt holes to the L.H compressor mounts. easy
