4.4 TDV8 cooling system bleed hose

I was prepared 2 years ago when the plastic fitting at the top radiator hose broke, with a 3/8 barb to 1/8 tapered brass fitting, thread tap and hose on hand but not prepared yesterday when the 90 deg plastic fitting at the join with the hose section from the thermostat broke. My son came to my rescue, obtaining and delivering a 90 deg double-ended barbed brass fitting, although option B would have been to replace the fitting and both hoses with a single hose which I had on hand. In hindsight I should have replaced the 90 deg fitting when the stub at the top radiator hose broke which would also have avoided having to sleeve the 90 deg fitting to accept 3/8 hose, as the original plastic hose was smaller. The hose section from the thermostat housing is 3/8 (10mm?) so the 90 deg brass fitting is appropriate.
When I get to replace the thermostat housing assembly which includes the 90 deg fitting, my brass fitting will be retained.

On both occasions I lightly knocked the fittings but the thin plastic was very brittle whereas when new the bumping wouldn't have caused them to snap off.

I'm chasing a slow loss of coolant and was starting to remove the donut for a higher pressure test than my last attempt which didn't reveal any leaks, but I have in mind to replace the thermostat housing and all hoses in the V soon even if I can't find any leaks there.

I found the slow leak. I should have had a better check at the higher pressure before removing the air intake because the radiator is leaking along the crimp on the back of the top tank. As the leak is slow, I'll leave the cap fitted whilst I find a new radiator and all the other parts in the V that I want to replace.

Different but that doesn't mean finding one is easier. I'm trying to get genuine but it's early days yet.

    Hey Graeme,
I had Aussie Desert Coolers custom make 3 core ally radiator for my p38 years ago, was straight swap and have never had cooling issues since. They also fitted bleed valve to top!
Reasonably priced compared to genuine & does better job, no more plastic!
    Worth giving them a call.

Thanks for the suggestion. However I need to swap out the leaking one and fit the replacement in the one exercise as I cannot be without the car whilst a bespoke one is constructed. I have the same issue with the option to have alloy tanks made for this core but with the added disadvantage that the core is already 12 years old. I'll be replacing all the hoses and plastic in the V at the same time with the hope to get another 10-12 years use.

Edit: I'll be fitting a Nissens version which reportedly is OEM.
