I think you're correct about it using the Evoque chassis, the other thing about not having a T/C is really how many people actually use it anyway.

Not having a T/C has not hurt the Amarok, which according to some reviews I have read. There was a review recently in 4x4 Aust of a single range RRS and they were pretty impressed what it would do without the T/C, not saying it's for me, but makes you wonder if the dual range case was offered as an option, what % of sales would actually take it up.

Yeah there are probably at least two sides to this ...

People who would potentially save thousands buying a car without all that running gear .... cause they would never use it.

And maybe the people who would get by with what more cogs in a gearbox would offer ... some beach work, dirt tracks, etc.

Fundamentally, wasn't a duel ratio gearbox introduced as a way of getting more gears in a standard box ... so logic would suggest, that with today's new boxes ... and future developments ... you wouldn't need the extra hardware as you could have 10 or more gears in the one transmission?

The Freelander and Evoque share the same chassis, as well as the Volvo xc60, s80, Jag X type and Ford Mondeo!! It's the Ford EUCD platform.

I'm sure that when I was at the factory last week, they said it was the new Freelander.

Of course, they could have been feeding me a line.

It might just be the context of the statement.... Like "they're getting rid of the Freeo ... This is replacing it". In other words the new Freelander....called Disco Sport.

Yes exactly the freelander. 2 nameplate will be no more - they are aligning the brand to 3 "styles" defender family for the no frills nuts bolts hardcore, discovery family for the utilitarian user who likes leather & electronic aids & range rover family for the real luxury market. Current evoque runs on the freelander 2 running gear. Freelander 2 goes most places just hindered by clearance. Close to 400nm in 1.6t makes it a beach eater. There was a rrs single range following me around land rover experience - seemed to go all the places the D4 went albeit a little faster & consequently harsher. I don't think I'd want single range if I was doing serious off-road towing though.
