Yep, the proportions are much better than the D1, even though the rear overhang should be worse off road. I never cared for the D1 shape at all.
The original RRC was just a gorgeous shape too.
D2C and RRC and last of the fenders are 3 of the best imo
And practical can be considered beautiful too.
I remember a number of years ago the Willys MB made the shortlist of the most beautiful cars of the 20th century, and IIRC it was voted on by car designers.
That's nothing superfluous about it, total form follows function.

The RRC also has to be one of the greats from a form and function point of view
