Africa is very similar to AU outback, ive been there and seen it first hand.

Notice the concentration of testing.. as far as the world goes... based the variety of locations and testing and in comparison to anything I have ever seen.. safe to say it will be tested adequately for Australian conditions [emoji23]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...caaef73954.jpg

It's poor marketing to go on about how important Aus is and that we will get Defneder first...but not bring a couple over to hit Cape York and the Simpson. On late test versions close to release the smart money would be on doing OTT in the far North and ensure each has a snorkel and winch. It would enhance its reputation no end in Aus if it could do that track.

To be fair, Kia did take a Sorento up Hells Gate - but on AT tyres, with the sway bars disconnected and with a bash plate added. And it looks steep, so I'm surprised that even locking it in first gear worked.

I think you are overestimating the reliability.. Control electronics have a pretty big job to do in electric cars.
How they manage power flow in and out of the batteries is not a simple job and a bank of batteries can be killed pretty easily. You should spend some time talking with some rc car guys and see the money and upgrades they spend on speed controllers, batteries, chargers etc.

Look at F1 and you'll see its more often the MGU-K, MGU-H, or the control elecs causing trouble than the ICE.
Watch the youtube vid of Tiff Needel trying the Tesla Model S race car and see it go into low power mode after half a lap because it overheated.

Elec cars of some sort, maybe battery, maybe hydrogen, maybe something else will be the future but ICE needs to be around for a long time yet because the technology hasn't developed enough for main stream adoption.

Aaaaand that is the whole point that zeros, myself and others have been making over the last 42,345 posts! We predicted that LR would trade on the long loved history of the series / LandRover and Defender and just build another SUV. I have no problems with JLR making an off-road capable 6 seat wagon ... but it’s not in the same as a defender.

That’s the whole friggen point. There are something like 176 non-agricultural sexy SUVs on the market. Just pick one.

I’ve only had two defenders, prior to that I had an SE as Disco 1... it became NOT agricultural enough for what i do?

JLR could have made a 78/79 killer - the market is ripening for that as Tojo runs out of power plants. I reckon if they spent as much as they have on marketing just another boring (the 2020) just building a proper defender with solid warranty they would end up selling as many and actually meeting a growing marketplace.

As predicted this thing will just morph into another JLR SUV no heart no sole and no purpose?

I don't think there will ever be another car like that. I dont think a car like that could pass global standards. Jeep tried and it got a 1 star safety rating from a ground up redesign. Will they have to re-engineer it in 5 years? Jimny has a new body and engine but the chassis gearbox, transfer, axles.. everything underneath looks identical to the '98 model I had so they didn't need to put much R&D or tooling into that.
All cars need to share platforms these days. It's not economicaly viable to do anything else so to build a bespoke ladder chassis for one model was never going to happen. Landrover isn't a volume manufacturer so would need to partner with another brand and the total market for the whole segment may not even be enough for that. Toyota and Subaru partnered on the BRZ/86 and questions are still around about continuing it on, BMW had to partner with Toyota to do the Z4 with their Supra and even Mazda had to partner with Fiat to make the latest MX5.

It takes a rediculous amount of money to design a new car and the near future of cars is going to change pretty quickly compared to what we are used to, so they also need to try and future proof the design to last the 10 years it needs to pay for itself.

I think the new Defender will be a modern interpretation of Series and Defender. Built on a modern platform that works with modern car manufacturing economics with modern technologies. I really hope they do the hertitage justice as much as they can by having a practical character to the interior and styling cues that show where it came from while still being able to meet the regulatory requirements handed to them so they can actually sell the thing.

From what I've seen I think it will be ok. Better than just killing it off completely at least.
