It's the chassis and driveline strength, (and brakes, which will be more than adequate I'm sure) not the spring rate that determines load capability ;)

This is pretty unimpressive wheel travel...stiff as a board. I really hope Defender is more impressive.

Agreed to a degree however the air springs help keep the load level and stop it sitting on bumpstops plus allow it to corner and drive safer etc. You can have all the chassis strength and brakes in the world but if your sitting on your bump stops or pointing at the sky or have springs upgraded to be soo hard when unloaded its unbearable, its pointless.
In your opinion if you set a 2019 D5 5 seater with 18s and 33s with zero ks out across the desert with 1T payload including fuel and a 110, 2016 with zero ks with 1T including fuel and said keep driving until something breaks, which would last the longest and why?

There is a number of threads on paint protection / stick on magnets etc in the new discovery sections at the moment who are the target audience for this thing.
Surely people that care that much about showroom paint condition don’t want ripple pattern body panels? They could never polish it?

It’s kinda like John Haines old challenge to any aluminium boat maker in the 90s. I believe he said
“You bring your best tin boat, then choose any Hull I have built ever. I’ll give it a once over for safety then we will head towards NewZealand and keep going till your boat sinks!!!!”
The reality with your challenge is on pure long term toughness you’d have to drive along way - I think that crossing desert country especially thick mulga desert
tyres would be the rate limiting factor. How tough a tyre can you get in 285/70R18 or whatever you propose the D5 wears?
I’m sure the D5 would succeed admirably if it was a scooch across the French Line but that doesn’t really define a level of toughness because pretty much any SUV straight out of the showroom could also do it?

The plate on the bonnet mustn't be functional ...The plate needs to be top of front guards to be able to be stood on unless the bonnet is bloody strong.
Land Rover have a habit of having the best engineering with, well, let's just say less than the best execution at times. I am hopeful that this vehicle will be solid and reliably built in a way which the other vehicles in its pack can lean on for marketing purposes. It wouldn't be hard to make it more reliable for offroading than the way in which the last of the Defenders left the factory (ie without owners fixing the issues). I reckon the build quality will be there. It's tyres and the drive away prices that have me concerned. We will see soon enough.

Yeah agree if real the bonnet has to be strong, its not that difficult from an engineering point of view, current defender people walk over bulge section.
