Its a juggling act for manufactures, it looks like LR will have wheel options to suit all driving scenarios on or offroad in the new defender so happy days.
Its been sorted with the D5, this will be even further improved with the new defender given the larger factory tyre size and lower factory wheel size options.

Agree it’s about caliper/ brake size but if Toyota can do adequate brakes on a 200series with 17” rims
and Ford can do it on an F250 with a 1.9T payload and 8.1T tow rating can do adequate brakes on 17”
JLR are either incompetent brake engineers or they do it for other reasons - which I am arguing are aesthetic - nothing more

Especially with a bright red caliper inside

What should be remembered is that tyres are the easiest adjustable suspension component. Low profile severely limits the ability to adjust.

European brakes are bigger and more powerful than rest of world. They have high speed autobahns and highways and customer expectations are higher. Look at the AMS test as one example. Can't compare a lumbering, low speed F-Series with... anything else actually [emoji14] And towing is irrelevant to brakes as the trailer does all of its own stopping.
The Landcruiser brakes would fail the AMS test miserably, as do almost all non Europeans. JLR put monster brakes on because that's the price of entry. BMW, Mercedes, etc all do the same. Compare a small/medium car brakes from Fiat, Renault, Ford, Opel, etc to something from SEAsia. Way bigger and better. Big brakes are expensive and they'd avoid it if they could. They put the smallest brakes on they can get away with, which is why they do several different sizes for each model (despite the tooling and engineering and complexity costs) depending on vehicle weight and performance. The old Defender had small brakes because that's all it needed. Therefore small wheels. New one will be a rocketship in comparison, so big brakes and big wheels. Lower engine outputs will have smaller brakes and higher outputs will have bigger brakes. It's been like that for decades and will continue.
You’ve obviously never driven on a freeway in USA if you think F250 are lumbering and low speed
I’ve been passed several times by a 250 towing a 35’ plus boat while I’m on cruise doing 85mph

If your point actually held water then Toyota 200s would not be able to be sold in Europe (but they are)

Past few posts are more proof to me that this piece of **** JLR are pushing onto the public as their most capable 4x4 ever is 99% road oriented . Yes I agree it will the the most capable 4x4 ever as far as 'on road' performance goes. You don't even need close to that sort of capability on any Australian road. It can stay on the Autobahns as far as I'm concerned. Low Profile tyres have no place at all on an off road vehicle. 17" max imo . I expect i'll see these things pushed into the scrub off the side of the GCR in a few years, ..... if its not sealed by then .
