I might be in the market about 2 years after release, when bugs have been sorted and used vehicles are available.

SubscriberSorry blackrangie! I wasn't question your relationship with the dealer for one minute hahah!
Guess if you buy a new JLR product every so often through the same dealer they probably know you....and if they are smart they come up with good or special deals. I know a case when they traded a new Ferrari against the clients Maserati mainly due to the 'matching' personal plates. m
Agreed, historicly back in D2,RRC,P38,L322 days the quality control was not the best before release of new model or redesign, most likely due to not enough ks in the real world testing and lack of fundamental reliability engineered into the vehicle.
As said above the D5,DS, Evoque, Velar, Fpace, ipace and no doubt others all have a good rep since release, this is no doubt due to their new testing regimes, even the humble disco sport and evoque were tested in the middle east.
Evoque dubai testing.

Vehicle design, reliability engineering and extreme testing have come a long way since those early landrover days, JLR now test all over the world in extremes for very long periods.
After having a completely custom vehicle built myself, i know about the testing it takes to iron out bugs and its not always fun being the guinea pig.
However with all the delays the new defender is not rushed, JLR are doing no doubt upwards of 250,000 ks of data logged testing.
"from cold weather testing in Arjeplog in Sweden to extreme hot weather testing in Death Valley in the USA."
"Testing of the new vehicle is already underway around the world with the first development mules and prototypes reaching North American shores earlier this month. Testing on the continent provides valuable data to engineers given the wide variety of terrain and surfaces available in America. Engineers will subject the vehicle to rigorous test extremes to make sure the new Defender is the most off-road capable Land Rover vehicle ever; operating in temperatures from -40F to +120F while driving the test vehicles on- and off-road at altitudes of more than 13,000 feet above sea level."
Jaguar Land Rover Opens New Test Center in Dubai - autoevolution
"Tata-owned British car company Jaguar Land Rover has long been testing its upcoming cars in hot places like Dubai to see if all the components can stand up to the rigors of the summer heat. But today, they've announced they are enhancing their test capabilities in the Middle East by opening a new engineering test centre in Dubai, UAE.
The new facility is located in the Al Barsha area of Dubai, UAE, and will not only be used for hot weather testing. Chassis durability and calibration will also be examined, all in one of the hottest environment known to man. Heaters and ventilation systems will be pushed to extremes, and Land Rover's reputation as the off-road king will be put agains the endless dunes of sand."
For me, the wait has been long enough and the testing and track record of JLR when it comes to testing redesigned or new vehicles in the last 10years has been very good and confidence inspiring.
Even so, 100% there will be recalls and bugs however imo most will be ironed out pre release, its in JLRs best interest to make sure of this also as a lot is riding on the defenders success and rep.
After waiting so long and the defender being in peoples hands still 1-1.5years off. For me I see more benefit of being on the list that not, especially if its not my cup of tea, nothing lost.
There is also the first release of a new vehicle value factor to consider especially the early numbered cars, obviously only if it is a success!
I'm pretty excited about it to be honest, if ya can't already tell
A mate (and fellow Landy lover) rekons he spotted some camo Defender mules outside of Mildura. Unfortunately going the other way and he was driving... It’s possible (probable) that there are some here doing testing....
