Ive seen a few around now (Jimny) and I really like the look of them, much better looking than the new defender. Even withought its camo its just going to look like a funny RR, and at around 30k its a steal. The only downfall is its size it wouldnt be a good family car, but for 2 people its more than enough load space and square also which makes life much better.
New Jimny over new Defender IMOWon’t be retro...
The new full size discos and RR are really nice but the price isnt right for most people, rather spend 80k+ on a unimog or a cheaper tourer and go around the world with the savings Won’t be retro...

Amazon has tipped in US$700m, GM is reportedly going to invest and they've actually bought an ex-Mitsubishi car factory.

I knew of people who did tour the outback in the early Sierras, like the LJ80s.

Two of us toured the outback without issues in a Series 2, when roads and infrastructure were a lot worse than they are now, in the 1960s. Our main load was water and fuel!

But by the end of the seventies sales of short wheelbase four wheel drives were on the decline, to the extent that Rover Australia ceased selling them at the end of Series 3 production, and showed no inclination to sell any for the next twenty years or so.

And it was not just Landrover - same with the Japs.

To a large extent this reflects the 'need' to not even leave the kitchen sink behind when touring!

Defender is to be hybrid, not EV, I believe.

But the long wheel base Series vehicles had no where near the capability of a SWB,in hard off road work, particularly soft sand.

The LWB was quite a bit heavier, and often ran same engines, although there was the later 2.6l,(about 1967),but it was no rocket ship, used quite a bit more fuel, for very little gain.

    Many preferred the smaller engine.

    Referring to petrols,not the diesels.

Defender is rumoured to be on the new MLA infrastructure, which supports mild hybrid, hybrid, Electric powertrains.

"Even without camo its going to look like a funny RR", interesting, have you seen it without camo?

From where im sitting, I highly doubt it, looking at the padding on roof, bonnet, sides, window frames, wide flares, stance and comments from JLR such as "people are going to look at it and say, thats the new defender". "It will put the gwagon into the shade" etc.

Imo it will have a completely individual look, maybe the D5 could be classed as a funny lower spec RR.

With the Jimny, I've seen one at the dealer with 3 other people, everyone concluded within a few mins it was way to small to be practical for destination 4x4ing or touring for couples. Price is awesome, looks well built and reliable, Imo its a weekend plaything.

Defender will be more expensive but it will be 10x the car and will try to do everything well.
It won't have the space and safety limitations(3star) of a Jimny.

People will be willing to pay more, just like they do for Y62s,RRs, D5s, 200s, 79s and all the 4x4 utes. Not everyone can afford them but there is certainly a massive medium to high end 4x4 market.

Yeah the investment is insane, they have had the factory for some time, great way to tool up quick.
They mean business! Great looking too.

Yeah they'll hedge their bets until 2024.
